SIKKIM IN A NUTSHELL • Sikkim: a Kingdom prior to its merger in 1975. • Total geographical area: 7096 km2 • Total population: 6.07 Lakhs • Bordered by three countries (Nepal, TAR of China, Bhutan) • Large altitudinal range: 300- 8598m (Mt. Khangchendzonga) • Four administrative districts (N,E,W,S) • Diverse ethnic groups • Land use. (Forest 82%, Agriculture, Roads, Housing) • Bio Diversity.(surrounded by RF & WLS, wildlife corridor, IBA)

  3. Gangtok • Capital City: Gangtok; in lower Himalayas; 5,800 ft alt; HQ of East Sikkim District. • Population: "Notified Town Area“: 1,98,658. 53% Males, Females 47%. • Total area: 20 Sq. Km

  8. SWM in Sikkim • Semi organized collection and dumping. • No segregation at source. Mixed dumping. • No segregation at landfill. • Waste dumped in drains (jhoras). • Recycling/ Down cycling of Solid waste. • Unorganized Sector.

Research on EPR for SWM by Zero Waste Sikkim Group led by ECOSS • Title of the Study : Extended Producer Responsibility • Objective of the Study: Assess Volume –Consumption Plastic food Packaging- PET bottles - Tetra Packs in Sikkim Findings of the study • Annually 3.5 crore Plastic food packaging generated. • Annually over 55 lakh PET bottles generated. • Annually over 59 lakh Tetra Packs generated.
