What is Sports Medicine Anyway? • It’s a multidisciplinary healthcare for people seriously involved in exercise and/or sports. • It’s also the study and application of scientific & medical knowledge to exercise and athletics. • The aim is to promote health and fitness, while preventing, treating, & rehabilitating injury. • Many different Health Care Professionals are needed to care for athletes!

History of Sports Medicine • Gained recognition at the end of 19th / early 20th century. • The American College of Sports Medicine (ACMS) was founded in 1954. • ACMS • goal national health and fitness • grown to include lots of different professions • promotes idea that athletes need a trained physician as soon as possible

  13. Massage Therapist • The massage therapist works with physicians, nurses, and physical therapists to promote health and healing and to help manage stress.

  14. Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists • A certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) designs and implements safe and effective strength and conditioning programs.

  15. National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) • A National Strength & Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) designs & implements safe & effective strength & conditioning programs for individual clients.

  16. Sports Nutritionist • The sports nutritionist designs special diets capable of enhancing athletic performance. • Proper diet can result in better performance.

  17. Sports Psychologist • The sports psychologist works with athletes who are recovering from serious injury, giving emotional support and helping with goal-setting and motivation.

  18. The Role of Health Care Providers in the Athlete’s Circle of Care • The primary role of the health care providers involved in the care of athletes is to promote lifelong fitness and wellness, and to encourage prevention of illness and injury.

  19. The Role of Parents in the Athlete’s Circle of Care • Parents should maintain open communication with the athletic training staff regarding injury risk, athletic development, proper nutrition, and treatment of injuries.
