4. SPECIALS Specials Schedule follows a rotation between P.E., Art, and Music. We are split amongst Mrs. Rimmer’s, Harrell’s, Nelson’s, and Rumfield’s classes for specials. This being the case it is important that your child has shoes suitable for PE/recess in their backpack everyday. Please NO FLIP FLOPS - these can be a safety issue.

5. READING& WRITING Tomball ISD has embraced the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop Model. Some of the key elements of this model are: • Giving each reader and writer a choice in what they want to read and write about. • The time needed to really engage our readers and writers.   • The flexibility to see each student individually. • The flexibility to assess where they are currently performing and where we want them to go. • Allowing each student to be a successful reader and writer.

6. Spelling, Handwriting, and Grammar • Spelling: Focusing on Phonetic patterns and Phonemic Awareness; beyond rote memorization-application of skill • Grammar: Focusing on Patterns of Power using Mentor Sentences • Handwriting:Cursivewill be taught

MATH • Number talks: short warm up activities that help students apply mental math - we use as a warm up 2 - 3 times a week. • P.O.T.D.-Problem of the Day. • Addition and Subtraction Strategies: We will be doing activities that promote fluency with addition & subtraction facts. • Guided Math Workshop

No formal homework is required! • Suggestion: Read nightly for 15 minutes and practice math facts (addition and subtraction) up to 20, and spelling phonetic patterns review! • Occasional test reviewswill be sent home before tests. • Projects will also be sent home from time to time. • Literacy library bags will be sent home as well for reading support!                              10 minutes of math facts each night to prepare for timed Fact Test.

14. Parent Conferences • We will have a beginning of the year conference in October. • I will send a signup link around the middle of September for you to pick a conference time.

15. Is your child…NEW to TISD? Are you interested in nominating your child for testing for the Gifted and Talented Program? For more information about GT testing and our program you can visit Mrs. Dengler’s website or email her. Students who have been at Wildwood or in TISD will have an opportunity for testing nominations in March 2019.

Roboticsin 2nd Grade Robotics in 2nd Grade will provide students hands-on learning that is engaging, sparks creativity, develops critical thinking skills, ignites career possibilities — and is just plain fun! 17. Birthday NEWS • Please notify teacher if you wish to pass out treats to class. • Lunch room staff will not be available to help hand out treats so it will need to be distributed by parents. • We have 23 total students, and we do have a friend with a nut allergy.
