What is DDR?
  • DISARMAMENT - Collection, control and disposal of small arms and light weapons held by combatants
  • DEMOBILIZATION- Process by which the combatants (regular and / or irregular forces) either downsize or completely disband
  • REINTEGRATION - Process whereby people associated with armed groups and other displaced persons assimilate into socio-economic life of (civilian) communities. Long-term development

  • An integral component of post conflict security situations:
    • Voluntary weapons collection
    • Control and destruction of arms
    • Transitional social and economic support programmes for the return of former fighters, and those associated with the fighting forces, to go back to their communities or new points of integration

  • Joint collaboration between field peacekeeping missions and UN agencies to draft DDR policy
  • Develop an set of guidelines and standard operating procedures to cover the 30 areas of DDR work
  • The drafts of this set of policies is known as the Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS)
