  2. The Roles of the President

  3. As Chief of State, the President acts as an example for and symbol of the United States Represents America at special occasions and ceremonies. The President receives Kings, Queens, and Leaders of other Nations. Awards medals.

  4. As Chief Diplomat, the President handles foreign affairs The President conducts foreign policy by directing the actions of American Ambassadors. Signs treaties and trade agreements with other nations

  5. As Commander in Chief , the President commands the military The President decides where Armed Forces are to be stationed and what weapons will be used. The Department of Defense reports to the President as well as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who is the Presidents top military commander.

  6. As Chief Legislator, the President is a lawmaker The State of the Union is an annual address presented by the President of the United States to the United States Congress. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows the president to outline his legislative agenda and national priorities to Congress.

  7. As Chief of Party, the President is the leader of his or her party The President helps members of his party get elected, he makes campaign speeches needed for re-election, and heads the fund-raising for the party

  8. As Chief Executive, the President is Head of State and Chief Crisis Manager Decides how laws are enforced; chooses Cabinet members and advisors to help run the government. Acts as boss for all Federal employees.

  9. As Chief Guardian of the Economy, the President helps America remain prosperous The President monitors unemployment, inflation, taxation, business, and the general welfare of the nation. Although he does not control the economy, he receives credit for it when it goes well…......and bad

Federal laws give the president emergency powers Special authority given to the president to prevent or help a national emergency Example - Katrina The president may also issue executive orders Executive Orders (EOs) are legally binding orders given by the President, acting as the head of the Executive Branch, to Federal Administrative Agencies. Executive Orders are generally used to direct federal agencies and officials in their execution of congressionally established laws or policies. However, in many instances they have been used to guide agencies in directions contrary to congressional intent. Example – Emancipation Proclamation The President can also issue pardons and reprieves A reprieve is the temporary postponement of punishment. Clemency is a general term encompassing all of these. A pardon is the forgiveness of a crime and the penalty associated with it. Example – Richard Nixon
