  3. In your folder…. • Draw a body  • All around the body list things that can cause stress. • Inside the body – write the mental and physical things a person experiences when they feel stress.

  4. School – homework, tests, grades Parents – expectations, communication Sports Friends Peer pressure Money Relationships Your Health Not Enough Sleep Future plans – college? Siblings Jobs Too many activities Expectations of others Responsibilities Body image/Self Esteem Time Management – not enough of it!!! Examples of things that can cause stress….

  6. STRESS IS POSITIVE WHEN IT PROMOTES GROWTH AND ACCOMPLISHMENT. THIS TYPE IS CALLED EUSTRESS. LIST 3 EXAMPLES: • competing in sports • studying for tests • preparing for a speech

  7. STRESS IS NEGATIVE WHEN IT CAUSES HARM TO ONE’S BODY. THIS TYPE IS CALLED DISTRESS LIST 3 EXAMPLES • Test - so skip class-give up • so stressed that you can’t sleep • treating people bad around us • not eating • denial of how we feel

  9. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT AT MODERATE LEVELS STRESS CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE AND HELP YOU TO PERFORM AT YOUR BEST

  10. What happens when your BODY is under STRESS? STAGE 1: ALARM STAGE • your body releases adrenaline into bloodstream. • get a burst of energy • heart pumps faster • increase blood flow to muscles

  11. STAGE 2: RESISTANCE STAGE • During this stage your body tries to recover from the stress • Tries to go back to “normal”. This uses up a lot of energy and may result in: • Irritability - fatigue - lower ability to handle stress

  12. STAGE 3: EXHAUSTION STAGE • if the stress continues you become exhausted • the body is worn down and no longer has energy to fight • you get run down and it’s easy to get sick • make poor judgments • can not think clearly

  14. You may not be able to stop all the stress in your life. The key is to learn how to COPE with stress.

Dealing with STRESS • 1- Identify the stressor – What is causing your stress? • 2 - Identify your control over the stressor – Do you have control over this? • 3 - Identify if you can eliminate it – If you can control it or eliminate it, do so. • 4-If you cannot eliminate the stress - then figure out a healthy way to cope with it.
