  1. HIAPER Pod Development Group Discussion topics: brief review of where we are: pod group, large pods, NCAR pod, pylons, PMS canisters GAC flow study - status (typical wing stores) RAF flow studies – status & plans gap & HAIS pod instruments (what/when) collaborations (EUFAR, DLR, UK) next steps (tasks, staffing, schedule) other ______________? March 13, 2006

  2. review of where we are • pod group • Sep ’03 met with EUFAR to discuss collaboration; planned to submit NSF proposal for HIAPER • July ’04 pod group created & scope defined • Feb ’05 pod plan document released • large pods - NGCP & NRL400 • Dec ’03 GAC flow study : “Results show that the impact is large, with significant flow interference, drag and potential for buffeting and vibration.” March 13, 2006

  3. review of where we are • NCAR pod • GAC flow study  favorable • PMS canisters • will be first pods on G5 • pylons • video camera • laser velocimeter • single beam in PMS canister initially • next version multi-beam in pylon or ? • PMS canisters two per pylon • SPEC 2D-S/CPI • NCAR 20” pod • EUFAR reference pod ? March 13, 2006

  4. GAC flow study - status (typical wing stores) - March 13, 2006

  5. gap & HAIS pod instruments March 13, 2006

  6. collaborations – EUFAR-Jean-Louis Brenguier, Hugh Coe, Rolf Maser- • “reference pod” • Enviscope, http://www.enviscope.de/home_campaign.html • 15” dia, 115” long, 250 # load March 13, 2006

  7. collaborations – EUFAR-Jean-Louis Brenguier, Hugh Coe, Rolf Maser- • 1M €; design end Apr-2005; completion Oct-2008 • Flow modeling IFT & Meteo France • pod #1. X-probe on nose; 4 cm i.d. concentric isokinetic inlet feeds optical particle counter + CN + other aerosol instrument, venturi + pump, .. • pod #2. integrated optical measurements such as nephelometer, aethelometer, DMT SP-2 soot instrument, Gerber open-path neph, .. • EUFAR wants partners & share engineering costs March 13, 2006

  8. collaborations - DLR • HALO • DLR  new G-550 • possible avenue of collaboration: NCAR under-wing mount for PMS canisters • UCAR-DLR • non-disclosure agreement signed April 26, 2005 March 13, 2006
