  1. POD Basic Challenge 25 = j × 4 43 = h × (48 ÷ 6) ÷4 ÷4 64 = h × (48 ÷ 6) 6.25 = j 64 = h × (8) ÷8 ÷8 8 = h

  2. Discount Discount or markdown is the amount by which the regular price of an item is reduced. The sale price is the regular price minus the discount.

  3. Example 1 A DVD normally costs $22. This week it is on sale for 25% off the original price. What is the sale price of the DVD? Method 1: Subtract the discount from the regular price Turn 25% into a decimal Let d = discount d = percent × whole d = 0.25 × 22 d = 5.50 Subtract discount from cost. $22-$5.50 = $16.50

  4. Example 1 A DVD normally costs $22. This week it is on sale for 25% off the original price. What is the sale price of the DVD? Method 2: Subtract the percent from 100% 100% − 25% = 75% Let s = sale price S = 0.75 × 22 S = $16.50

  5. Whiteboard time A shirt is regularly priced at $42. It is on sale for 15% off of the regular price. What is the sale price of the shirt? 100% − 15% = 85% S = 0.85 × 42 S = $35.70

  6. Whiteboard time A boogie board that has a regular price of $69 is on sale at a 35% discount. What is the sale price with 7% tax? d = .35 × 69 d = 24.15 69 − 24.15 = 44.85 1.07 × 44.85 = $47.99

  7. Whiteboard time A CD that has a regular price of $15.50 is on sale at a 25% discount. What is the sale price with 6.5% sales tax. d = .25 × 15.50 d = 3.88 15.50 − 3.88 = 11.62 1.065 × 11.62 = $12.38

  8. Whiteboard time A cell phone is on sale for 30% off. If the sale price is $239.89, what is the original price. Remember part = percent × whole 239.89 = 0.7 × w ÷0.7 ÷0.7 $342.70 = w
