BP back on the road to recovery, BP Holdings

BP has overcome the biggest setback in its history to put itself in a position to reward shareholders with strong fundamental growth once more, says The Share Centre’s Graham Spooner. The oil giant lost 53 per cent of its value in the two months that followed the Macondo disaster. The Deepwater Horizon explosion caused the largest spill in the petroleum industry’s history but Spooner believes that recent moves by BP’s management should secure its future. "BP is still in the realms of transforming itself from the company it was prior to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill," he said. "It plans to sell off more low-returning assets and invest in those which have higher growth opportunities. Growth seekers will be pleased to hear the company plans to invest $45bn in future projects." The stock has been out of favour among much of the industry following two tumultuous years that saw it cut its dividend and put it in the firing line of US politicians. However, it has been a long-time favourite of M&G Recovery's Tom Dobell. The FE Alpha Manager believes the company, which was built to be profitable when oil is just $60 a barrel, believes the road to recovery can still be a profitable one, provided the management can resolve the legal issues and avoid becoming a target of competitors. Speaking to FE Trustnet last month he said: "The valuation of the business should imply a share price greatly higher than it is at now and unless the management gets its act together reasonably quickly, it is going to become lunch for somebody else in the industry." Spooner claims that BP has now staved off this threat with a series of major upgrades that have all boosted the share price. "2011 was a year of consolidation for BP and it has now set itself on a recovery trajectory," he said. "Dividends have been reinstated and between now and 2014 it expects to return to production in the Gulf of Mexico." BP Begins Next Stage In TNK-BP Sale Process, BP Holdings Glo

BP announced today that it is beginning the next stage in the process, required under the TNK-BP shareholder agreement, regarding the potential sale of its shareholding in TNK-BP. This follows the decision of Alfa Access-Renova to exercise its right to enter a period of negotiation to purchase part/ all of BP’s 50 per cent share in TNK-BP. As a result BP will tomorrow enter into a 90-day period of “good faith” negotiations with Alfa Access-Renova as required by the TNK-BP shareholder agreement. BP is also able to and will enter into negotiations with other interested parties in parallel for the sale of its share in TNK-BP. There can be no guarantee that any transaction will take place. Five centuries ago, when explorers were sailing the globe in a bid to discover new lands, many passed through Caribbean waters on their way to the Americas. Among them was the British navigator, Sir Walter Raleigh, who – it is said – came across a ‘lake’ of asphalt on the south-western corner of Trinidad in the 1590s. Pitch Lake, as it is known today, is one of the world’s largest natural deposits of this sticky, black substance – created by deep deposits of oil that are forced to the surface, where the lighter elements of the hydrocarbon evaporate to leave behind the heavy asphalt. Adventurers such as Raleigh used the substance to seal their ships’ hulls, before continuing a voyage. These days, exploration in the region is not about finding new territory to mark on an atlas, but identifying further hydrocarbon deposits hinted at by the ones those early navigators first came across. The expanse of dark viscous material that seeps up through the ground at Pitch Lake provides visual confirmation of the rich natural resources that lie beneath these islands’ surface and off their coastlines. Trinidad and Tobago enjoyed its first oil boom after 1910, although the abundant natural gas in its reservoirs was only fully appreciated several decades later. From the late 1970s, gas began to dominate the country’s energy market, as it does today.
