E N D
Shot 1 • Seems quite upbeat and positive at the start "We just wanna party"- happy facial expressions. • No sign of any guns and violence • Man on the guitar can relate to entertaining the audience
Shot 2 • Topless- he's free, showing off his body- proud of who he is • Confident body language • Dancing for entertainment and fun, could connote that entertaining an audience is the priority • Jim crow body language- inter texual references, trying to draw attention to issues such as racial segregation and black history
Shot 3 • There were no signs of guns or violence so it’s a shock for the audience when he pulls it out. • The man no longer has the guitar and has a bag over his head which takes away his identity and humanity. • Costume- old confederate trousers, would see it in the confederate days in America, links to slavery- history. • Juxtaposition of the shots of him dancing and then pulling the trigger, its shocking, the audience arent expecting it. Might suggest that gun violence has been normalized and happens when you least expect.
Shot 4 • Tempo changes after the shooting- could suggest gun violence has an impact, it literally changes things. • Its school kids who are taking away the weapons and body- decentisies the shooting. • Kids should be scared ofguns but they are used to it, and are exposed to too much violence. This could also reference school shooting. • The young generation want to clean up America, older generation aren’t so involved as its their 'normal' • The Gun is wrapped carefully- makes it seem planned, gun is valuable, the man is not. The man is just dragged off. Red covering- blood, violence • This music video has LAYERS OF DEEP MEANING
Shot 5 • After the shooting, he continues to dance, connoting he is unaffected but in the background chaos is going on- running chasing, can referecne that hidden violence and crime is all around us. • The shallow focus can connote that we are being distracted from the violence but it happens all around us,its our 'normality' • Ties into the idea that black enterttainment s popular and fun to watch but violence and black victims are ignored. • The dance the children are performing is South African which is referecing a country that has had a lot of segregation issues
Shot 6 • School kids dancing with him are similar to dances that were viral at the time that it came out. • Lyrics reference guns and straps- he has to be armed • Camera pans across- hides the transition, smooth transition • Transitions to the gospel choir- calmness and organized • Abandoned/ old cars might reference riots- looted open doors open boot, standing on top of cars, encourages audience to think of protests • Could reference cars being abonded during hurricane Katrina- affected huge numbers of black Americans, left them living in poverty.
Shot 7 • Gospel choir- very happy upbeat positive facial expressions • Sense of community because of the unison (movements, costume)… • Reflects black culture/ traditions • Lyrics can reflect advice given to black people to just focus on career and ignore racism "you do you" • Reference to the idea that black people are often financially exploited by enternainment indistry and the focus is on their worth
Shot 8 • Again the gun violence changes the tone of the video- ruins the happiness • Snap back to reality • His changeable attitude can reflect how sudden bad things happen and how quickly people move on afterwards. • Whole video is Circular, it returns back towards violence- it’s a cycle • The gun is taken again delicately and wrapped- its planned • Props in the background bats- more violence • Tracking shot reveals the police car suggests that police ignore violence right in front of them- absent when needed • IN DEPT POLITICAL REFRENCES
Shot 9 • Gets on top of the car and lights a cigarette – is care free and what he has just done (the shootings) does not affect him in any way. • Cigarettes can also connote "relaxation time" after doing a task, this can relate to him doing his shootings and relaxing • Standing on top of the car- higher up than other people gives him power • Also in the middle of the shot- gives him importance • Again, the cars could reference riots
Shot 10 • In this shot he's running away from someone- his facial expressions connote fear • The dark lighting also connotes fear • Hes going to hide, it’s a mystery, the darkness leaves the audience questioning where he's going to hide • Darkness can also connote evilness, suggesting that what he's done is evil and that is where he is running to- the 'evil' side
