  5. UNIT ASSESSMENT PROMPT • Write an essay in which you analyze Holden’s character traits and motivations. • What techniques does Salinger use to reveal Holden’s character? • What does Holden’s dialogue and internal thoughts reveal about his traits and motivations? GQs

  6. OBJECTIVE • Analyze chapters 1 and 2 of Catcher in a close read, annotatingfor evidence of Holden’s character traits and writing style.

  7. Review of Terms

  8. NEW: Guided Notes (Continued from Yesterday) Hyperbole Italics Rhetorical Questions Very Long Paragraphs Grammatical Errors

  9. HYPERBOLE – What is it? Hyperboles are exaggerations to create emphasis or effect. • AKA: Intentional exaggeration

  10. HYPERBOLE – CITR EXAMPLE “He’s in Hollywood. That isn’t too far from this crumby place, and he comes over and visits me practically every weekend” (pg 3).

  11. ITALICS – What is it? [For the purpose of this unit] Used to emphasize or contrast a word or words in a sentence.

  12. ITALICS - Example “He’s got a lot of dough, now. He didn’t useto.”

  13. RHETORICAL QUESTIONS – What are they? A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked in order to make a point. A question with no expected answer.

  14. RHETORICAL QUESTIONS – CITR Example “Or – you know what he’d do? He’d leave it on your bed or something.” (pg 33, chap 3)

  15. VERY LONG PARAGRAPHS – “What are they?” Paragraphs that are 8 or more sentences long. (hint: trust your eye, if it looks long… it probably is)

  16. VERY LONG PARAGRAPHS – CITR Example “They each had their own room and all. They were both around seventy years old, or even more than that. They got a bang out of things, though--in a half-assed way, of course. I know that sounds mean to say, but I don't mean it mean. I just mean that I used to think about old Spencer quite a lot, and if you thought about him too much, you wondered what the heck he was still living for. I mean, he was all stooped over, and he had very terrible posture, and in class, whenever he dropped a piece of chalk at the blackboard, some guy in the front row always had to get up and pick it up and hand it to him. That’s awful, in my opinion. But if you thought about him just enough and not too much, you could figure it out that he wasn't doing too bad for himself. For instance, one Sunday when some other guys and I were over there for hot chocolate, he showed us this old beat-up Navajo blanket that he and Mrs. Spencer'd bought off some Indian in Yellowstone Park. You could tell old Spencer'd got a big bang out of buying it. That's what I mean. You take somebody old as hell, like old Spencer, and they can get a big bang out of buying a blanket.”

  17. GRAMMATICAL ERRORS – What are they? Errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, double negatives, contractions, prepositions at the end of the sentence… etc

  18. GRAMMATICAL ERRORS - Example “Like as if all you ever did at Pencey was play polo all the time.” [Extra words]

  19. TASK: • Work with your elbow partner to identify 1 example for hyperbole, italics, very long paragraphs, and grammatical errors in chapters 1 and 2 • (save rhetorical questions for later) • Record your example in the Style Detective packet

  20. HOMEWORK: Post-Its RHETORICAL QUESTION In this passage Holden asks a rhetorical question related to Ackley. I believe he does this because he doesn’t actually want to hear the answer, making me think that he is a self-conscious about the things he says. 1 post-itevery 2 pages On your post-it: Select 1 OF THE STYLISTIC DEVICES we have discussed in class (stream of consciousness, hyperbole, digression… etc) and analyze WHAT IT REVEALS ABOUT HOLDEN’S CHARACTER

  21. EXIT TICKET • Your packet needs to be completed • 1 Post-It example RHETORICAL QUESTION In this passage Holden asks a rhetorical question related to Ackley. I believe he does this because he doesn’t actually want to hear the answer, making me think that he is a self-conscious about the things he says.
