  1. Parts of Speech! Each part of speech explains not what the word is, but how the word is used. In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next. Brittany Klaahsen

  2. Noun A noun is a person, place, thing, and idea. Examples: • I went to the store. • The dog sleeps in a kennel. • According to the newspaper, the fire was accidental. person place thing idea

  3. Adjective An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun. Examples: Mrs. Morison painted her greenwalls. The refrigerator is cold and white. Many stores have good sales this weekend.

  4. Pronoun A pronoun replaces a noun or pronoun. Examples: Common pronouns: I, you she, he, it, we, they, me, her, him, us, them, mine, that, these, whom, who, which, whoever, whichever, everything After many days, they returned home. Judy threw it away. The calculator is mine. The boy wanted these instead. Who wrote this paper? We donated everythingwe could find. Mark was going to rent a car, but we ended up doing itourselves.

  5. Verb The verb expresses actions, events, or a state of being. Examples: The dog ran fast. We watched the television. I will eat spaghetti tonight for supper.

  6. Adverb An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, another adverb, a phrase, or a clause. Examples: The janitor quickly mopped the gym floor. He did not have all the ingredients the recipe called for; therefore, he decided to make something else.

  7. Preposition A preposition links nouns, verbs, and phrases. Examples: Common prepositions: about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, and without I made supper with oregano. We went canoeing down the river. Rob just bought a new pair of shoes.

  8. Conjunction A conjunction links words, phrases and clauses. Examples: Common conjunctions: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet, after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where, whether, while, both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, so...as, whether...or The dress and veil are white. After dinner, we went to a movie. Both my mother and grandmother work at a school.

  9. Interjection An interjection is a word or phrase that conveys emotion. Examples: Ouch, that hurts! Oh no! I forgot the appointment! My goodness, that tastes awful!
