  2. Explorer: Cortes Country: Spain Date: February 1519 Area Explored: Eastern coast of Mexico

  3. Accomplishments: • Conquered the Aztecs • Built Mexico City which became the capital of New Spain. • Inspired other Spaniards to come to the Americas.

  4. Explorer: Pineda Country: Spain Date: 1519 Area Explored: Texas Coast

  5. Accomplishments: • Observed and mapped the coast of Texas.

  6. Explorer: Narvaez Country: Spain Date: 1527 or 1528 Area Explored: Area between Florida and Mexico

  7. Accomplishments: • First Europeansto enter Texas.

  8. Explorer: De Vaca Country: Spain Date:1527 Area Explored: Galveston Island area

  9. Accomplishments: • Lived with the Karankawa Indians for 6 years. • Became known as shaman. • Passed along tales of cities filled with magnificent houses and lands rich with copper, emeralds, and turquoise.

  10. Explorer: Estevanico Country: He was from Morocco, but sailing for Spain. Date: 1527 Area Explored: Galveston Island area

  11. Accomplishments: • First known black man to enter Texas. • Reported news of an area called Cibola, filled with riches and gems.

  13. Accomplishments: • Saw Cibola from a distance and reported it to be a golden city.

  15. Accomplishments: • Found Cibola and disappointment. • Saw the Palo Duro and Grand canyons. • Claimed Wichita country for Spain.

  16. Explorer: De Soto Country: Spain Date: 1539 Area Explored: From Florida to the Mississippi River.

  17. Accomplishments: • First European explorer to reach the Mississippi River.

  18. Explorer: De Moscoso Country: Spain Date: 1542 Area Explored: Mississippi River to Brazos River.

  20. Explorer: La Salle Country: France Date: 1682 Area Explored: MississippiRiver and Texas Coast

  21. Accomplishments: • Claimed all land around the Mississippi River for the King of France. • Built Fort St. Louis in Texas. • Gave the French a claim to Texas.
