  1. Nervous system Your Body’s CPU and Electrical Highway

  2. What is Our Nervous System? • Our Nervous System is made up of our Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerves. • It controls our actions, monitors and controls our body’s many functions and processes our senses. • The cool thing is that most of what our nervous system does is outside our conscious control.

  3. The Central Nervous System • The CNS is made of our brain and spinal cord. • It is the core of our system. • The brain controls our body. • The spinal cord is the main route through which the brain communicates with the body.

  4. The Peripheral Nervous System • The PNS is the network of nerves that carries messages to and from the CNS. • This network is spread throughout our entire body.

  5. The Autonomic Nervous System • The ANS, or involuntary nervous system, works independently of our conscious mind (we don’t have to think about it). • This system controls things like our heart rate, respiration (breathing), digestion, excretion, etc. • It also controls our fight or flight survival instinct. • We can take conscious control of some of these features.

  6. How Does It Work? • Information is sent throughout the nervous system by small electrical impulses known as nerve impulses. • They are around 0.1 volts, and last around 0.001seconds.
