  2. What is a phrase? A phrase is a group of words that does not have a subject or a predicate. A phrase cannot stand alone as a sentence. Examples: 1. remembered for centuries 2. a gesture of friendship

  3. Phrase or not a phrase??? • Fell down in the hole. • I stopped at the mall. • Hit with a ball. • He ran to the store. • Picked up the stick.

  4. What is an independent clause? • An independent clause contains both a subject and a predicate. • It expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. • Examples: • Larry lives in Italy. • Mary is a teacher.

  5. Independent clause or not??? • She ran to the store to pick up milk. • Mr. Best is our principal. • The dog. • I am a good speller.

  6. What is a dependent clause? A dependent clause has a subject and a predicate, but it does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses often begin with connecting words such as because, although, when, which, that, and since. Examples: • when he laughed • because I can’t

  7. Dependent clause or not???? • Because she felt sleepy. • He slept until noon. • Mr. Miller is a doctor. • Although it was finished.

  8. Complex Sentences Complex sentences are made up of an independent clause and a dependent clause. Example: • When you arrived, I felt so happy. (dependent clause) (independent clause) The two clauses are joined by a comma!!!

  9. Add to the following clauses to make them complex sentences.Don’t forget the comma!!! • When you finished your project • She painted her room the color of pink • Sebastian’s sister answered the phone • Although I lived in New York for a year
