  2. Encouraged a spirit of curiosity (humanism…) *man and his world General re-birth of learning (classics...) *Greeks and Romans Printing press helps spread new ideas

  3. Need for better tools for navigation… *Research in astronomy and math increases • Explorers make more discoveries about the world… *adds to scientific knowledge of the world

  4. Copernicus 1473-1543 • Heliocentric, but still dealt with perfect circles • Retrograde motions explained by earth’s movements • Church was OK with it, opened doors to more study but it was NOT accurate

  5. Brahe and Kepler • Tyco Brahe (1546-1601) - some planets revolved around earth, others the sun, left thousands of observations • Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) – Brahe’s assistance, orbits of planets are elliptical

  6. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) • Used Telescope – to observe – universe much more complex • Confirms Copernicus • Stated that the bible is wrong • 1992 – Pope John Paul II admitted errors by Pope Urban VIII advisors at the trial

  7. Rene Descartes (1596-1650)I think, therefore I am • Deductive reasoning – deducing a conclusion from a set of premises not from scientific observation • Mathematics is the foundation of all science

  8. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) • Gravity – matter attracts particles with a force proportional to the product of the two masses • Became a hero in his time, wealthy • Victory of scientific method

  11. Women during the Scientific Revolution • Difficult for women • Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673) – wrote of science, often critically - correctly • Maria Cunitz – astronomer, author • Wives often helped husbands, actually co-worked although husbands received the credit
