Exploring Science Year 7 • Integrated scheme of work including units in Physics, Chemistry and Biology • Emphasis on “How Science Works” and practical work • Taught in class groups during years 7 & 8 • As far as possible one teacher per class (except 7 AMB) • Aim to maintain student enthusiasm

Schemes of Work and Assessment • 12 units per year, 4 for each of the science subjects • Each unit is completed in 3 weeks • Different classes follow a different sequence of units • Followed by a test that gives a mark out of 25 and a National Curriculum level • Tests account for 50% of the grade at the end of the year • 50% from end of year examination

  42. Modern Foreign Languages at BSM Year 7 French (3 periods a fortnight) German (2 periods a fortnight)

  43. Why French & German? • We build on the excellent French provision at BSM Primary • German is still one of the major foreign languages taught in the UK • They are from different language families • One of the school aims is to introduce Arabic in some form from 2013

  46. How do we assess? • There are Unit Tests at the end of each unit. • We also test “subtly” during the unit. • Regular vocabulary tests. • The pupils have a good idea as to what level they are working.

  47. Where should my child be in terms of National Curriculum levels? • French – Level 3 • German – Level 2

  48. Homework • French A is set on Wednesdays • French B is set on Sundays • 1 written, 1 learning a cycle • German on the day of the lesson • alternates between written and learning Homeworks should last about 30 minutes

  49. How can you help? • Test their vocabulary • a little, regularly and often • Do not get too worried about grammar, general comprehension is seen as being more important at this stage. • Make sure they do their homework
