  7. *AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a small, slowly replicating retrovirus that leads to AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency virus) HIV affects the body’s Helper T cells Causes a weakened immune response that allows for opportunistic infections and cancers HIV is spread by contact of bodily fluids including: syringe sharing, sexual contact, blood infusions, and the consumption of breast milk AIDS was first documented in 1981 in the US although the origins are believed to be in primates in west-central Africa
