  2. As red blood cells pick up carbon dioxide from tissues to be moved to the lungs, the carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is transported to the lungs where it is converted back to carbon dioxide and water, and the carbon dioxide can then be exhaled. Carbonic anhydrase increases the rate of production of carbonic acid from only 200 molecules of carbonic acid to 600,000 molecules being formed per hour.
