  2. Official Definition • Official Definition: an integrated computer circuit that performs all the functions of a CPU.

  3. Our Definition • Our Definition: Circuit that does many things in a computer.

  4. Examples of Microprocessors • Intel 4004- first microprocessor, 4-bit central processing unit. • Intel 8008- world’s 1st 8-bit microprocessor

  5. Timeline Part 1 • April 1972- Intel 8008 it’s clock speed was 200 kilohertz and had 3,500 transistors. • December 1974- A remake of Intel 8008 with a clock speed of 2 MHz and 6,000 transistors. • August 1976- The Intel 8085- Had a clock speed of 5 MHz and 6,500 transistors. • September 1978- Intel 8086- It’s clock speed was at 10MHz was an5 MHz increase by from the last one and rose to 29,000 transistors.

  6. Timeline Part 2 • In February 1982, the Intel 286 reached a clock speed of 12 MHz and jumped to 134,000 transistors. • The Intel 386 was 16 MHz and had 275,000 transistors. • In June 1996 the Pentium 1 came out with 300 MHz clock speed and 3.3 million transistors.

  7. Timeline Part 3 • In November 2006 the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 came out with 8 MB and 582 million transistors.
