  12. 3b. Readiness of Soil Moisture Data:Calibration of probes Every probe, every installation We are unclear about a relationship between site physical characteristics and ECH2O output. The difference in calibration curve for each site is given below: DFCB: volumetric water content = -0.116 + 0.0007 x DFTB: volumetric water content = -0.4612 + 0.0014 x DFTC: volumetric water content = -0.5256 + 0.0023 x DFCC: volumetric water content = -0.2076 + 0.0008 x

  14. What are your plans for further analysis over the next two years (specifically, what do you think you might be able to contribute to a special issue in which paper submission might be scheduled for June 2009)?

  15. 7. What recommendations do you have at this time for how we might alter our collection of core data variables ? Carbon: • SIMPLE, RELEVANT, SYSTEMATIC • 1. Re-sample FP and UP and Wetlands for soil carbon • 2. Increase sample n for O horizons • Bulk density, C, N • 3. Initiate bioavailability measures: • soil incubations,fractionation,litterbags • include archive samples • 4. Repeat every 5 or 10 yrs …….NEEDED !!!..............SOIL PREP LAB ………………

  16. 7. What recommendations do you have at this time for how we might alter our collection of core data variables ? Soil Moisture: • Recover %vol moisture data from all projects • 2. Back- calibrate %VMC in database • 3. New probes to include measurement of O horizons • TDR and temperature • 4. Calibrate all probes with 1-2 core-samplings of VMC when wet, moist • 5. Repeat calibrations every 5-10 yrs; rotate sites through sampling program
