  2. I. It's Location in Asia The Philippines is located in the southeastern portion of Asia. Her neighbor on the north is the Republic of China, Taiwan or Formosa), while on the west is Vietnam. Further west is Thailand. Immediately to the south of the Philippines is Indonesia and to the southwest are Malaysia and Singapore.

  5. Cebu City It is the oldest city in the Philippines and abound in cultural heritage that dates back to the early conquest by Spain several hundred years ago. Located on the eastern shore of Cebu province in Central Visayas lies Cebu city, the Queen City of the South. Cebu city is an important metropolitan center in the country second only to Metropolitan Manila.

  6. Cebu city is one of the most important cultural centers in the Philippines. This was mainly brought about by Spanish influences, of which religion plays a very important role in the shaping of the city's structure. Cebu abounds with religious objects and structures; one of these is Magellan's Cross which is the city's most famous landmark. This cross was brought by Spain's Ferdinand Magellan in 1952 when he arrived in the country. It is presently housed in a chapel in Magellan street between City and Colegio del Santo Niño and is revered by Filipinos.

  7. II. It's Government The System of Government These islands are divided into provinces, which are run like states in the United States. Each province is ruled by a governor, a vice governor, and members of the provincial board. Each province is composed of cities, towns, and barrios

FROM PHILIPPINE independence TO RAMOS REGIME • The United States, as provided in the Jones-McDuffie law of 1934, granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946. • The Roxas Administration (1946-1948). inaugurated as first president of the new republic was Manuel A. Roxas, who defeated then-President Sergio Osmena, Sr., in the April 1946 national election. (Osmena was elected vice president in 1935 and succeeded Quezon to the presidency after the latter died while in exile in the United States.)

It's People • As of 2009, the estimated population is 92,226,600 people. • The Negrito form a minority of the population. • The majority of Filipinos (about 95%) are made up of various ethno linguistic *Austronesian or Malay ethnic groups who descended from a population of * Taiwanese aborigines, who settled in the Philippines about 6,000 years ago. *Mestizos, those of part Filipino descent mixed with Spanish, American, Chinese, and other ethnic groups form a minority of the population.

It's Language • The most commonly spoken language is Filipino which is a de facto language based on the Tagalog dialect. • Filipino and English are the official languages. • Additionally, there are between 120 to 170 distinct indigenous Filipino languages (depending on their classification), a dozen of which have over one million speakers. • Spanish and Arabic are recognized as voluntary and optional languages in the Philippine constitution.

  26. V. It's Religion • Christianity ( 80%) is the main religion, with Roman Catholicism making up the majority of the population. • Other religion ( 5 %) • Islam ( 5 %) • Buddhism • Hinduism • atheist

  27. VI. It's Education • Education in the Philippines is based on both Western and Eastern ideology and philosophy influenced by both Spain and the United States. Filipino children enter public school at about age three, starting from • Nursery up to Kindergarten. • Elementary school (6 to 7 years). • High school (4 years). • College Entrance Examinations (CEE), after which they enter University (3 to 5 years). • Other institutions include Private school, Preparatory school, International school, and Science High School. @ School year in the Philippines starts from June, and ends in March with a two-month summer break from April to May, one week of semestral break in October, and a week or two during Christmas, and New Year holidays.
