  1. South Africa South Africa By Meina K.

  2. Native Blacks • Native blacks are who naturally lives there and stands in minority group of whites people in this situation. Even though they are the biggest group. • Minority group is mean having less power than the majority group. And they are treated unfairly by the whites. The apartheid laws decides all of the rules, and the discrimination and prejudice occurs from that.

  3. Boers • The Boers has moved from a only-white people country, so when they came to South Africa and saw people who has tend color, they thought they’re not human. • The Boers won the war and took over the South Africa, so people who used to lived in South Africa had to be in minority group, and they had discriminated by the Boers.

  4. Discrimination & Prejudice Prejudice is a perceived opinion that isn’t based on a true fact. Whites prejudice blacks, whites thinks they are stupid and bad at everything, even though they’re not. Discrimination is a higher level of prejudice. Whites treats blacks unfairly. The apartheid laws keep whites to be leader of blacks, and if blacks didn’t follow the laws whites give them some violence if needed.

  5. Causes

  6. Historical Causes There are two big groups in the South Africa, Natives and Dutch. The Dutch has took over the land of South Africa in 1600s’, and so Dutch had power than the blacks. They treated the blacks as their slaves, and that is when the discrimination has occurred.

  7. Physical Causes • There’s a part called “amygdala” in your brain, and that has been deciding to fight or flight (avoid) in the situation. • The amygdala thinks that the same region people as our sides and different region people as enemies, even though that’s true or false.

  8. Religious Causes • The whites has been believing to gods. And that made the white people to believe “blacks are slave”. The whites wanted a reason to make the blacks slave, so they decided blacks has to be slaves of whites because god’s wants to be so.

  9. Effects from Prejudice

  10. Anti Locution Sometimes in prison, a policemen call a criminal with a bad nickname to call them. Anti locution is similar to it, but whites call to blacks like that. Blacks didn’t do anything bad but whites call them by a dehumanizing nicknames and make fun and tease them.

  11. Avoidance In South Africa, everything is distinguished by their skin color. Schools, hospitals, beaches, restaurants… everywhere. Whites governments has decided to avoid the blacks.

  12. Violence In the blacks didn’t follow the apartheid laws, they often get violence from the white police. When they got arrested, they get violence most of the days and sometimes they get to death for the worst.

  13. Genocide The whites killed hundreds of blacks in one time. That happened mostly in the black army and black protesters. They killed them by shooting.

  14. Effects

  15. Social Effects • If the blacks parents didn’t have or forgot to bring the pass, which is a book that shown their profile, and the white policemen noticed they are going be arrest by them, and their kids will be left over at the street. • The blacks and whites cannot be together. It wasn’t not allow to have marry, date, or sexual relation. • Whites and blacks wasn’t allow to live together or near. Blacks were sent to Sophia Town where it is hard to live, and whites could have live in a big convenient house.

  16. Physical Effects • Whites and blacks had been fighting often because of the prejudice, so they often injured them selves. Sometimes they might get killed by them. • The apartheid laws made the blacks poor, so they became bandits, stole, and hurt people for money.

  17. Economical Effects • Health: Blacks were not able to live healthy lives. They lived in huts with insufficient food and water supply. When sick, they were not allowed to be treated by doctors. • War: The Apartheid caused many wars between blacks and whites that cost many lives of both groups. • Education: The education of blacks was restricted. They were not able to learn as much as whites, and were forced to learn that they were inferior to whites, decreasing their self esteem. • Property: Whites took over and raid the property of blacks in order to gain more land for themselves. • Jobs/Careers: Blacks would always have to work for whites, as it was a law. Their jobs were low pay, and extremely laboring. • South Africa was in a bad position, economically, due to the Apartheid.

  18. Solution

  19. How They Solved • In 1960, the blacks (such as Steven Biko and Nelson Mandela) has been complaining about the apartheid laws, and finally the whites has agreed with them, and decided to remove the apartheid laws. • In 1994, the first democratic election took place in South Africa, the black man Nelson Mandela. And he has chosen to a president of South Africa.
