  1. Paper Presentation - 2 Green Cellular Network with Femtocells Cyber Physical Systems (Green Networks) Prof. Nicholas Maxemchuk Manu Dhundi

  2. Summary • Energy consumption framework to evaluate total energy consumption in a cellular network with femto cells. • Limited to cells installed in pre-determined locations. • Results show that femto cells make conventional cellular networks greener. • A guideline is provided to network operators to deploy and manage a femtocell network in a greener way.

  3. Brief Overview • 3 main energy consumption units in a cellular network: • BS -- 3 energy states namely, (i) turn-off (ii) radio-off (iii)radio on • MS • FAP (Femto cell Access Point) • 3 working scenarios: • Femtocells Penetration rate • Open Access Rate • Cell Coverage Extension • Simulation Environment: Hexagonal Cells, 7 BSs, 86 MSs per cell (indoor, outdoor, near indoor), 10 buildings per cell, Building may or may not have FAPs, path loss.

  4. Energy consumption units • Base Station • 3 kW max power • E1 always there • E2 when ON • E3 while communication

  5. Energy consumption units • Mobile Station • During Talk : 1 W • During Standby : 0.017 W • Femto Cell Access Points (FAPs) • No thorough investigation yet. • 9W is max limit as per EU code of conduct on energy.

  6. Working scenarios • Femtocells Penetration Rate • $1.5 billion market by 2012 • Most data traffic through FAPs • Penetration Rate: 0 < rp< 1 • Open Access Rate • Closed Subscriber Groups (CSGs) closed • Closed Subscriber Groups (CSGs) open • Open Subscriber Groups (OSG) • Cell Coverage Extension

  7. Simulation Parameters 7 BS with omni-directional antennas and 86 MSs per cell

  8. Simulation Results - 1

  9. Simulation Results - 2

  10. Simulation Results - 3

  11. Conclusion • A framework to evaluate total energy consumption in a cellular network with femto cells is discussed. • Femto Cell is greener technology. • Guideline (implicit) to cellular operators to deploy femto cells.
