  11. The PCiTAL main buildings: an example of bioclimatic design • Bioclimatic design • The most outstanding aspects of environmental innovation have been: • Taking advantage of the existing conditions of the buildings: • “Greenhouse-shade” yards between buildings • Protection of energy gains • Modulation of energy gains • Natural ventilation • Natural lighting

  12. The PCiTAL main buildings: an example of bioclimatic design General view of PCiTAL main buildings

  13. The PCiTAL main buildings: an example of bioclimatic design • Control of energy demand: • Thermal isolation • Statistic monitoring and control of temperatures Graphics showing external temperature and yard temperatures: difference of 10 ºC

  14. The PCiTAL main buildings: an example of bioclimatic design • Energy efficiency: • Lighting • Heating / Cooling • Materials with low environmental impact: natural materials • and recycled/recyclable materials. • Collecting rainwater and water produced by external • condensation from winter fogs.

  15. The Centre for Agricultural and Forestry resources: a place for research, experimentation and social awareness. • “Arboretum” – Botanical garden • 7 hectares • 400 tree species, ordered according to 4 biomes and 18 landscapes

  16. The Centre for Agricultural and Forestry resources: a place for research, experimentation and social awareness • “Arboretum” – Botanical garden • With advanced technological solutions which favour easy and • economical maintenance • It will allow educational and recreational programmes • Accessible to handicapped people. • It includes research projects in the fields of Botany, fruit growing • techniques and urban agriculture • It also features old and modern agriculture systems and technologies

  17. Enterprise incubator - new companies based on technology and University spin-off companies. Spin-off emerged out of the University of Lleida related to environment sector: • Precision agricultural production systems. Research and development lines lead to a reduction in crop residues and to a lesser waste of environmental and financial resources.

  18. Evalparc Project. Current experiences and successful cases • To significantly reduce (between 20 and 30%) the current environmental impact of pig meat production by reducing polluting waste • To increase feeding efficiency and to reduce production costs by a precise adjustment of supplied food according to individual animal needs. That would mean savings of 18-30% in protein consumption. • To implement product traceability in order to improve food security. • To improve animal welfare. New intelligent feeding system to decrease environmental impact and production costs in pig farms • This system has been developed by the research group in precision agriculture, agro-robotics and agro-technology of the University of Lleida, in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. With the support of:

  19. Evalparc Project. Current experiences and successful cases • High heat flux heat sink with adaptable profile of temperature • The proposed system is a heat sink allowing the extraction of high temperature flux density combining the heat extraction techniques through impact jets and micro-channels. • The problem solved by this system is the distribution control of local extraction of temperature flux along the route of cooling fluids and therefore that of the temperature distribution in the cooled object.

  20. Support to applied R+D+i projects Technological Centre for the Bread Sector The Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida Functional food, nutrition and health Catalan Wood Institute Research fields focus on product mechanical and physical properties (especially of those used in building) and the improvement of durability against xylophages.

  21. Support to applied R+D+i projects Forest fire digital prevention service A daily fire occurrence prediction system is currently under development. The system should predict a number of fires, daily, in the 10 x 10 km2 cells operationally used by the Ministry of Environment in Spain for prevention and suppression purposes. With the financial support of:

  22. Developing networking strategies: Master degree on bio-construction • Master degree on bio-construction, pioneer in Spain • Bio-construction is a discipline that promotes healthy construction, being concerned about the relationships between buildings, environment and the health of people living, working or studying in them. • There are some harmful factors to our health, often invisible, which must be studied so that we can achieve more harmonious and healthy spaces: • Artificial factors: electrical and electromagnetic pollution, ventilation, atmospheric and acoustic pollution, substances coming from building materials. • Natural factors: telluric and geophysical alterations, presence of gases from subsoil and radiations. Promoted by ITL, University of Lleida in collaboration with PCiTAL, in accordance with the German Institut für Baubiologie + Oekologie Neubeuern (IBN)

  23. New opportunities, new projects • Lleida biotech • Museum of Science, Environment and Climate • The Kyoto House for demonstration (bioclimatic and domotics)

  24. New opportunities, new projects: Lleida Biotech The Lleida region possesses several conditions to become a pole of green biotechnology industry (eco-product industry). A cluster of white biotechnology industries is being encouraged, this is, the application of biotechnology within the industrial field. Through biochemical processes several products are manufactured: chemicals, energy products, materials, etc., all of them from natural resources (non-food crops). This noteworthy knowledge and economic potential, together with the new technological infrastructures, have led to the creation of a new economic sector: the bio-product industries, which convert biomass (non-food crops, forest biomass, urban plant waste, etc.) by means of industrial and biotechnological processes, into bio-products like: bio-plastics, bio-paints, bio-energy, bio-fuel and bio-construction materials. Lleida Biotech is the leading name and trade mark used by the region to promote, within its sphere of influence, the bio-product industries and to convert Lleida into a region determined to promote eco-innovation. www.lleidabiotech.com

  25. New opportunities, new projects: Lleida Biotech • What are Bio-products? One example: Bio-construction materials • Biomaterial research is being done in association with building material manufacturers and crop growers. • House building and public infrastructures can also benefit from nature and the properties of plant fibres. Raw materials of plant origin can give physical properties to: • Materials for isolation • Light structural walls • Finishing of floors, walls and concrete • Eco-composites (biopolymers) that give lightness, mechanical resistance and thermal isolation • And for a near future, we are already talking about bio-metals • Raw materials: fibres such as flax, hemp, jute, agave, biopolymers. • Advantages: environmental, biodegradable, recyclable. • Technological and market challenges: development of alternative fibres

  26. New opportunities, new projects: Museum of climate Museum of Science, Environment and Climate Promoted by Lleida Council, Fundació “la Caixa” and Lleida Science and Technology Park
