  1. Journal 1: Honor vs. Betrayal Write a paragraph, or create a detailed T-chart to show the differences between honor and betrayal. Include specific people/characters, characteristics, and actions. Honor Betrayal How do you define betrayal? Think about people you consider traitors. What characteristics define them? What are some ways they have betrayed others? How do you define honor? Think about people you consider honorable. What characteristics define them? What are some honorable actions they have done? vs.

  2. Journal 2: Explain how these pictures relate to main events from Macbeth.

  3. Journal 3: Courage Towards the end of Act I and into Act II, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth demonstrate courage. When did you or someone you know show courage in a difficult time? Maybe it was courage to do the right thing, or maybe it was courage to do the wrong thing. How did courage manifest itself in your actions or someone else’s actions?

  4. Journal 4: Success In Act II, Macbeth experiences success. What does it feel like to be successful? What is something you really wanted and were successful in getting? What does being successful look like for you now and for the future? Write about any way that success connects with your life.

  5. Journal 5: Fear After their success in Act II, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth become fearful. What scares you? When are you afraid? How do you deal with your fears? If you’re overwhelmed with fear, who can help you regain your confidence? Explain the role fear has in your life.

  6. Journal 6: Revenge In Acts IV and V, people who Macbeth has wronged begin to seek revenge. When did you try to get revenge on someone? Or, when did someone try to get revenge on you? Why were you seeking revenge? What were your goals in exacting revenge? Were you successful? Why or why not?

  7. Journal 7: Memorization What are some strategies you can use to memorize your lines for the Macbeth Scene Performance?

  8. Journal 8: Foil Foil: a character who contrasts with the protagonist in order to highlight particular qualities Who is Macbeth’s foil? Explain how that character shows qualities that are opposite from those Macbeth shows.

  9. Journal 9: Minor Character, Major Impact Choose a minor character from the play, and explain how that character had a major impact. Some characters you might consider are: Duncan, Donalbain, Ross, Fleance, Siward, Lady Macduff (others possible)

  10. Journal 10: Revisiting Honor and Betrayal Option 1: What are some examples of honor in the play? What are some examples of betrayal in the play? Which drives more of the action in the play: honor or betrayal? Why? Option 2: Who is the most honorable character in the play? Why? Who is the worst betrayer (or traitor) in the play? Why?
