  3. DEFINITIONS PROFESSIONAL: In between the World English and Webster Dictionaries, there are a couple of different definitions of the word ‘Professional’ • A professional is he/she who has or shows the skill, good judgment & polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. • One who engages in one of the learned professions, characterized by or conforming to the technical and standards of a profession. • A person who engages in an activity with great competence. • Person formally certified by a professional body of belonging to a specific profession by virtue of having completed a required course of studies and/or practice. And whose competence can be measured against an established set of standards. IT Ethics and Codes of Professional Practice

  4. DEFINITIONS CONT’D ETHICS Are written or not written set of beliefs about right and wrong behaviors. CODE OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Enforceable set of Principles and acceptance Practices put together to guide the professional behaviors in work places. They are meant to serve as guidelines for ethical decision making, high standard of practice & ethical behavior, trust & respect from general public & evaluation benchmark for self-assessment with an overall aim of benefitting the individual, the profession and the society at large. 5. UNIQUENESS OF THE IT PROFESSION The All-comers Profession: There is no other profession that has attracted so much inter-professional interest as Information Technology. The positive side of this joint stake-ownership is that many other professions and professionals heavily rely on the usage of IT tools in the successful delivery of their own jobs and profession. I have had to enviously watch Architects, Engineers and Doctors dexterously banging away at the keyboard of their laptops and in their usage of IT tools. In a way, this should be good news: more IT products & services will be sold. The Zinox, Omatek, Chams, System Specs of this world and lots of individual professionals are expected to benefit more. IT Ethics and Codes of Professional Practice

  6. UNIQUENESS OF THE IT PROFESSION CONT’D The area we should frown at, is when the all-comers tag get abused. Such as when: • Non professionals are given the order to supply IT equipments at the expense of qualified professionals. • When rich corporate entities take advantage of their size to undermine registered IT outfits. There was time when a bank ventured into having an IT outfit not only to service her IT needs but to go into competing for IT jobs. IT Ethics and Codes of Professional Practice

  7. UNIQUENESS OF THE IT PROFESSION CONT’D Therefore in the all-comers profession that we find ourselves we have no choice but to reach deeper and be more knowledgeable than the IT users who are not strictly IT professionals. An IT professional in this decade, can’t afford to be lazy or laid back. IT Ethics and Codes of Professional Practice
