  2. What does + mean in math? Put together two or more numbers to find “how many.” Which words help us know when to add? • in all • all together • how many • total

  3. What does the - symbol mean in math? Take away an amount from a number in order to find what is left. Which words help us know when to subtract? • more than • left • difference • not • how many more

  4. T I P S T = Think about how you will solve the problem. I = What Information is given and asked in the problem? P = Work on the Problem. S = Present a Solution.

  5. A board game contains 57 total coins. There are 31 black  coins, and 11 green  coins. How many coins are there of other colors?

  6. TIPS T (+, -) I 57 coins total 31 black coins 11 green coins How many other coins are there? P 31+11=42, 57-42=15 S 15 coins

  7. James read 1/6 the books on his list last month and 2/6 of the books on his list this month. How many books from his list did James read in all? How should we solve this problem? 1/6 + 3/6 = 4/6

  8. James ate 2/6 of a pizza for lunch. He ate 3/6 of the pizza for dinner. How much more pizza did James eat for dinner than he did for lunch. How should we solve this problem? 2/6 – 1/6 = 1/6
