  2. Strategy • Understand • Read the problem - DON’T focus on the numbers • Visualize and or draw picture of what is being asked • Underline the keywords and important facts – (More, of, less, total, how many, percent) • Plan • Make a list of Information you know • How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Solve steps in order • Write answer with label • Look Back • Did I answer the question being asked? • Does the answer make sense? • Did I label the answer

  3. Understand • What do you know? What are they Asking? • Plan • Make a list of Information you know • How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back A farm stand has 509 ears of corn to sell. How many dozen ears can the farm stand sell? • How many dozen ears of corn are in 509? 509 ears of corn dozen = 12 Operation - Division 1 Step 509 ears/12 ears per dozen = 42 dozen with 5 ears remaining 42 dozens x 12 = 504 R 5

  4. One pound of carrots makes 6 ounces of juice. The stand owner squeezes 34 pounds of carrots to sell in 8 ounces glasses. By the afternoon, the farm has sold all the glasses. How much juice is left over ? Explain your answer • Understand • What do you know? What are they Asking? • Plan • Make a list of Information you know - How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back • After selling all carrot juice in 8oz glasses, how much is left over 1 lb of carrots makes 6oz of juice We have 34 pounds of carrots Serving size is 8 oz How much juice does 34 lbs make? Operation : Multiplication How many 8 oz cups can I make out of that? Operation: Division What is the left over? Operation: Multiplication 3 Step 0.5 serving X 8oz = 4 oz left 34lb X 6oz = 204 oz 204oz/8oz = 25.5 servings 204 oz-200oz = 4 oz is left over 25servings x 8oz = 200oz

  5. A Message had a total of 200 letter, of which 34% were A's. How many A's were in the Message? • Understand • What do you know? What are they Asking? • Plan • Make a list of Information you know - How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back How many A’s were in the whole message 200 Letters Total in message 34 % are A’s 34% = 0.34 Total Number of Letters X portion that are A’s 1 Step - Operation - Multiplication 200 Letters X .34 # A’s = 68 Letter A’s 200 | 68 = 0.34 X 100 = 34%

  6. Of the 300 students in the Computer Club, 150 are sixth graders. What percent are sixth graders? • Understand • What do you know? What are they Asking? • Plan • Make a list of Information you know - How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back What percent of the whole club are sixth graders 300 total students 150 sixth graders Sixth graders/ Total # students Percent is out of 100 2 Steps – Division and Multiplication 0.50 X 100 = 50 % are sixth graders 300 X 0.50 = 150 sixth graders

How far is it from the Indian Garden to the Bright Angel campground? • Understand • What do you know? What are they Asking - • PlaNMake a list of Information you know - How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back How many miles from Indian Garden to Campground is it? From Beginning to river via Bright Angel Trail – 7 7/10 miles From end to Campground – 1 3/5 miles From Beginning to Indian Garden – 4 ½ Miles Draw a picture How far from Indian Garden to river? 2 steps – Operations Subtract then addition 3 1/5 + 1 3/5 = 4 4/5 Miles 7 7/10 miles – 4 ½ Miles = 3 2/10 or 3 1/5 miles

  8. North North Rim Colorado River Campground 1 3/5 miles 7 7/10 miles Bright Angel Trail Draw picture ? From Beginning to river via Bright Angel Trail – 7 7/10 miles From end to Campground – 1 3/5 miles From Beginning to Indian Garden – 4 ½ Miles Indian Garden How far is it from the Indian Garden to the Bright Angel campground? 4 ½ miles How far from Indian Garden to river? South Rim 4 4/5 Miles 7 7/10 miles – 4 ½ Miles = 3 2/10 or 3 1/5 miles 3 1/5 + 1 3/5 =

  9. From the Bright Angel Campground, the trail continues north for about 1/2 mile where it passes through Phantom Ranch. From there, the journey to the north rim is a difficult 13 7/8 mile hike. What are they Asking • Plan • Make a list of Information you know - How many steps? What operations need to be done • Solve • Decide on a starting point and work in order • Look Back After Hiking in Morning and afternoon, How miles left to the north rim? From Campground to Phantom ranch - 1/2miles From Phantom ranch to North rim is - 13 7/8 miles Hiked 6 1/8 miles in Morning Hiked 6 3/4 miles in Afternoon 2 steps – Addition and Subtraction 6 1/8 + 6 ¾ = 6 1/8 + 6 6/8 = 12 7/8 miles hiked 13 7/8 - 12 7/8 miles = 1 Mile left to north Rim 12 7/8 + 1 = 13 7/8 miles
