  2. What is a Word Problem? • A word problem is a math problem that has lots of words. • A word problem can be 1, 2, or even 3 sentences long.

  3. How Do I Solve a Word Problem? • Step 1: Make a Number Family Arrow. • Step 2: Find the right information! • Look for names of people or things. • Look for comparison words. • Look for comparison numbers. Small Number Small Number Big Number What are comparison words? Comparison numbers?

  4. Comparison Words • Comparison Words tell you when a person or thing is BIGGER or smaller. • They usually end in –er. • If something is BIGGER, it goes in the BIG number spot on a number family arrow.

  5. Comparison Numbers • Comparison numbers are always the numbers just before the comparison word. The man was 15 pounds heavier than her.

  6. Let’s Take a Look! • Here’s a word problem. Jim is 10 inches taller than Bob. Jim is 86 inches tall. How tall is Bob? • Set up number family arrow. • Look for names of people or things. • Look for comparison words. • Look for comparison numbers.
