  1. VOCABULARY • Deck or pack • Suit • Hearts • Clubs • Diamonds • Spades • Dealer • Shuffle • Pick up • Rank • Draw • Set • Joker • Jack • Ace • Wildcard • Face down • Scapegoat

  2. PLAYING CARDS • There are 52 cards in a pack • Each pack contains 4 suits: Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades • Each suit has 13 cards • The rank of each card is shown in the top left hand corner • Kings, Queens and Jacks are sometimes referred to as “face cards” • An ACE is a special card as it can have either a “high” value or a “low” value • Jokers are often used as “wildcards” in a game and can be used instead of the real card • At the start of a game, one person is always chosen to be the dealer • The dealer must shuffle and give the correct amount of cards to each player

  3. GO FISH! Number of Players: 2 to 6 players Goal: To collect the most sets of four cards Setup: The dealer shuffles and gives five cards to each player. All remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile Rules: • Randomly choose a player to go first • On your turn, ask a player for a specific card rank. For example: “Kate, please give me your 9s." You must already hold at least one card of the requested rank in your hand • If the player you ask has any of the cards you request, she must give you all of her cards of that rank. In the example above, Kate would have to give you all of her 9s • If you get one or more cards from the player you ask, you get another turn. You may ask any player for any rank you already hold, including the same one you just asked for

  4. If the person you ask has no relevant cards, they say "Go fish." You then draw the top card from the draw pile • If you happen to draw a card of the rank asked for, show it to the other players and you get another turn. However, if you draw a card that's not what you asked for, it becomes the next player's turn. You keep the drawn card, whatever rank it is. • When you collect a set of four cards of the same rank, immediately show the set to the other players and place the four cards face down in front of yourself • When the draw pile runs out, keep playing until all of the cards have been made into sets of four. When the draw pile is exhausted, no one says "Go fish." If you ask someone for a card she doesn't have, it becomes her turn. Winning: Go Fish continues until either someone has no cards left in their hand or the draw pile runs out. The winner is the player who then has the most sets of four HAPPY FISHING!

  5. OLD MAID Old Maid is part of a family of card games known as "scapegoat" games. In scapegoat games, the goal is to avoid having a particular card or cards Players: 2 to 8 players Goal: To avoid being the player who ends the game holding the Old Maid Setup: Remove three of the queens from the deck - the remaining queen is the Old Maid. Choose a dealer. The dealer shuffles and distributes the cards as evenly as possible among the group. It's acceptable for some players to have more cards than others Rules • Players sort their cards and discard any pairs. If a player has three of a kind, he discards two of the cards and keeps the third • The dealer then offers his hand, face down, to the player on his left. That player randomly takes one card from the dealer. If the card matches one he already has in his hand, he puts the pair down. If not, he keeps it

  6. Play proceeds clockwise, so the player to the left of the dealer then offers his hand, face down, to the player on his left. This cycle repeats until there are no more pairs and the only remaining card is the Old Maid. Winning: The game ends when the Old Maid is the only card in play. The person holding the Old Maid loses

  7. PIG Players 3 to 13 players Goal: To be the first to collect four cards of the same rank. If another player beats you to that goal, you must not be the last to realize it Setup: For each player in the game, you need four cards of the same rank from the deck. The dealer shuffles and gives four cards to each player Rules: • At the same time, players all choose one card from their hands and pass it to the player on their left. Next they pick up the card they've received from the player on their right • Each player can never have more than four cards in his hand. It's illegal for a player to pick up a new card before passing one to the left • When a player collects four of a kind, he quietly touches his nose • When one player does this, every other player must do the same, as quickly as possible • The last player to touch his nose, loses

  8. Scoring: Each player has 3 lives. The last player to touch his nose loses a life. When a player loses all 3 lives, he is eliminated from the game. Remove a set of four cards from the deck and play another round Winning: The final two players in the game are co-winners
