Mill’s methods

Explore the causal influences on critical thinking grades using Mill's methods. Analyze data to draw conclusions. Identify factors causing amnesia after brain injury and lower rates of tooth decay. Determine the cause of funny noises in a car and stomachache after eating shrimp.

  1. Mill’s methods What causes what? Which method is used?

  2. Five patients all show amnesia after brain injury. What is the cause of the amnesia? Which method do we employ to find that out? • Patient 1—damage to the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. • Patient 2—damage to the hippocampus, amygdala, and entorhinalcortex. • Patient 3—damage to the thalamus and hippocampus. • Patient 4—damage to the prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala. • Patient 5—damage to the hippocampus and amygdala.

  3. What is the likely cause of lower rates of tooth decay?

  4. What’s the likely cause of their not getting the loan?

  5. Two students go to the Nurse's office. Mike gets ill, Phil doesn’t. What’s the cause?

  6. Distinguish three features of a plant's growth pattern: • The development of strong stems and root structure. • The production of fruit and flowers. • The development of large, healthy green leaves • Applying a 10-10-10 fertilizer (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) results in all three. • We know thatnitrogenpromotes the healthy growth of leaves • Potassium encourages the development of stronger stems and roots • Which method do we employ to determine what caused our plants to produce fruit and flowers more prolifically than usual?

  7. Which of Mill’s methods is illustrated in this example? You call your mechanic because your car makes a funny noise. The mechanic inquires and learns that you always drive with your pet bird in the back seat. They ask you to leave the bird at home while you drive and you find there is no noise. You conclude the bird is the cause of the funny noise.

  8. You conclude that eating shrimp is the cause of your stomachache. Why? In the past when you have gone to the beach, you have gotten sunburned. Also, when you have smoked cigarettes you have developed a headache. Today you went to the beach, smoked, and ate shrimp, and got sun burned, developed a headache, and had a bad stomachache.

  9. Given the following data, which of Mill’s methods can be used to draw a conclusion about causal influences on critical thinking grades?
