  1. Peetwood Park Stream Improvements City of Mission Hills, Kansas

  2. Project Issues • Eroding banks • Causing historic trees in Peetwood Park to fall into Brush Creek • Increasing sediment in Brush Creek • Threatening gas main • Mission Hills Channel Masterplan predicted meander would move through much of Peetwood Park

  3. Project Features • Stream was moved to stable alignment • Stable meanders • Grade controls/riffles • Flood bench • Pervious concrete tree wells • Stacked stone tree wells • Partially funded by KDHE grant and Johnson County SMAC • Water quality and geometry monitoring for 10 years

  4. Project Challenges • Harsh winter delayed construction • Wetter than average spring resulted in 50-year and 25-year flood events on project prior to vegetation • Flood events and delay in planting resulted in delayed plant establishment

  5. Project successes • Channel geometry was stable during flood events • Vegetation establishment is nearly 90% this spring • First post-construction water quality sampling was completed in April • Springs entering channel providing ideal wetland conditions
