Insulin InformationThe Basal-Bolus concept • BASAL INSULIN… the insulin the pancreas makes to keep the blood sugar within normal range when you are not eating. • BOLUS INSULIN… the insulin that the pancreas sends out in response to food • (if pt is NPO or does not eat hold the bolus dose of insulin) • CORRECTION INSULIN ….is given for high blood sugars, often in addition to bolus insulin.

  2. BOLUS (premeal)INSULIN INFORMATION PREMEAL INSULIN Eating patient • Give premeal insulin as ordered • Add correction scale as needed for high blood glucose

  3. NO FOOD? (pt is not eating or is NPO) HOLD PREMEAL INSULIN Why? Because pt isn’t eating This was ordered to cover food! If blood sugar is high and pt is NPO give correction scale as ordered for high blood sugar

  4. Basal Insulin Basal insulin should never be held, ANYTIME pt is changed to NPO status Notify physician managing blood sugar control in case insulin adjustments are needed.
