Genetic Analysis of Root Traits in Soybean

Dr. Abdelmajid Kassem from Fayetteville State University led a study involving undergraduate student researchers Sherrie Ivey and Samedy Lesly-Ann, and high school student Charles Royals. They worked on a project analyzing root traits in soybean plants, collecting data, using statistical software, and contributing to a research manuscript. The study involved a soybean RIL population grown in both greenhouse and field conditions. The research project also included mentoring Charles Royals in plant care, data collection, and research publication preparation. Future work will involve continued research beyond the initial study period.

  1. Genetic Analysis of Root Traits in SoybeanDr. Abdelmajid Kassem, Fayetteville State University, 07-66 Education: Two undergraduates (Sherrie Ivey and Samedy Lesly-Ann), and a high school student (Charles Royals) contributed to this work. These students grew a RIL population (n=100) of soybean in the greenhouse and in the field, took extensive root traits phenotypic data, analyzed these data using statistical software (WinQTL Cartographer), and participated in writing an abstract and a manuscript for publication. This work will continue beyond summer and C. Royals will join the team in the fall 2007 and spring 2008. Outreach: These projects included mentoring Charles Royals, a high school student in taking care of plants, taking root traits phenotypic data, analyzing data, and assisting in abstract and manuscript preparation.
