Shipping requirements • Ships may be tempted by economic pressures to take a short cut to save fuel and time, or to achieve pilot RV. • Increased size of vessels & growth in hazardous cargoes increases consequences when things go wrong • Cruise operators may be tempted to go to new, increasingly exotic, places – the Caribbean provides a classic example

  8. SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 9 Hydrographic Services 2.2 Contracting Governments to prepare and issue nautical charts, sailing directions, lists of lights, tide tables and other nautical publications, where applicable, satisfying the needs of safe navigation;

  9. SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 9 Hydrographic Services Contracting Governments: 2.3 To promulgate notices to mariners in order to keep nautical charts and publications, as far as possible, up to date; 2.4 To provide data management arrangements to support these services.

Set up organisation to: • Obtain and check information • Issue NAVWARNINGs and/or Notices to Mariners • Send the information to charting organisation to inform the rest of the shipping world Remember - it is as important to know what has gone as what is new

  14. Conclusion Nautical charts and publications must be: • Available – published as charts and publications, by or on behalf of an Administration. • Accurate – based on adequate source data, and regularly updated by timely NAVWARNINGs, Notices to Mariners and new editions as appropriate
