Grace F08ch1-1 Every human person by their creation – is endowed with a dignity that belongs to them This dignity is specific to humans by their nature and comes from the fact that they are made in the image and likeness of God. This dignity becomes the measure of morality because it reminds us that our lives are a gift of the Creator (God) and that that gift of life is supreme. Human dignity is always the measure for a moral action---

Grace F08ch1-2 Franz Jägerstätter (1907-1943), Blessed and martyr [witness] Jagerstatter was an illegitimate child who was troubled as a youth-- He experienced a profound conversion of life in the early 1930’s and devoted his life to living as a friend of God. He opposed Nazi fascism and refused to join the army eventually was arrested and sentenced to death. He was beheaded in 1943 and his remains were cremated.

Grace F08ch1-3 God offers to each person the GIFT of his friendship and his life In Catholic parlance we call this gift of sharing in God’s friendship and life ---- GRACE The very act of creation is a gift from God of his love and friendship This gift of God is an invitation not a command--- people are free to accept it or reject it.

  4. Grace F08ch1-4 The Church will speak of two different forms of grace: sanctifying and actual. Sanctfying grace is a share in God’s life; a gift from God that enables the soul to live with him and to respond to God’s friendship. Actual grace is the help God gives a person for a particular need to help conform their life to God’s will These forms of grace tell us that God has gifted us not only as a human person who has dignity but also God is constantly seeking to invite us to friendship with him in our daily lives.

Grace F08ch1-5 Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) German Lutheran pastor who was killed because of his opposition to Nazi policies in Germany Son of a German psychiatrist and a homemaker the sixth of eight children. He had a twine named Sabine. Studied at Turbigen and received his doctorate in theology from the University of Berlin at the age of 21 Too young to be ordained in the Lutheran church a minister, he continued his studies in New York at Union Theological Seminary where he also taught. He was struck in the USA at racial discrimination and found it a contradiction with American ideals and Christian thought. He returned to Germany in 1931 and was ordained a Lutheran minister. In the 1930’s during the rise of the Nazi regime he and other well known religious leaders publically opposed the Third Reich.

  6. Grace F08ch1-6 Bonhoeffer was arrested by the Nazis in 1943 on a charge of conspiracy. He was funneling money to smuggle Jews outside Germany. Imprisoned in a number of different place including concentration camps, he was finally detained in Flossenberg after it was discovered in 1944 that he had been part of a group that included German military officers who attempted to assassinate Adolph Hitler. During his prison term he wrote extensively although in secret about the cost of being a disciple of Christ and the need to follow one’s conscience. He was hanged on April 3, 1945 three weeks before the liberation of Germany.

  7. Grace F08ch1-7 Bonhoeffer spoke of two kinds of grade: costly grace and cheap grace. CHEAP GRACE: is to take God’s friendship and to use it by simply putting off hard decisions God loves a person no matter what; therefore a person can do what he/she wants. COSTLY GRACE: is to take the invitation of God’s friendship seriously so that at every point in one’s life --- the friendship of God demands commitment of one’s life.

  8. Grace F08ch1-8 Grace and The Church On the feast of Pentecost, Jesus’ promise of the Spirit was given. The Spirit of God coming to dwell in the disciples on that day made them one with Christ and formed the body of the Church This gift of the outpouring of the Spirit made them the children of God and bound them in a unique relationship of grace--- because of Jesus--- they became adopted sons and daughters of God

Grace F08ch1-9 This same gift of the Spirit is given in Baptism to all Christians and in Confirmation the gift of Spirit seals the covenant made with God making one a witness and full member of the community. This gift of the Spirit enables one to life in sanctifying grace and calls one to seek happiness (be moral) by growing to be the best person in following Jesus This gift of the Spirit leads one to DISCERN the way one should live because the Spirit prompts us to move to do the good. This DISCERNMENT leads one to fulfill one’s vocation

Grace F08ch1-10 Vocation comes form the Latin, “vocare” meaning, “to call” Many times people make vocation into a job or a lifestyle ---such as working for a company as an engineer or living a middle class lifestyle In the moral life--- your vocation– your calling is to be the person God made you to be and to be a follower of Christ learning from Him through the Church how to live and grow.

  11. Grace F08ch1-11 Edith Stein (October 12, 1891 – August 9, 1942) was a German-Jewish philosopher, a Carmelite nun, martyr, and saint of the Catholic Church, who died at Auschwitz. Raised a devout Jew, she earned a doctorate in philosophy from University of Freiburg in 1916. She taught there for two years before being dismissed because she was a woman. She converted to Catholicism and taught in a Dominican Sisters girl’s high school from 1921 until 1932. She was captured by the Nazis and suffered untold indignities for the faith and died in Auschwitz.

  12. Grace F08ch1-12 Dorothy Day (1897 –1980) was an American journalist turned anarchist, social activist and ultimately a devout Catholic. Came from a middle class family in Chicago with a strong sense of social responsibility. In her early years was a newspaper reporter and an anarchist and dabbled in Communism. Before her conversion she lived in a common law marriage and had an abortion Converted to Catholicism and devoted her life the poorest of the poor.

  13. Grace F08ch1-13 All of these individuals operated on a happiness that relied on FAITH Faith is that trust that what one has said is trustworthy of believing Someone is trustworthy because of who that person is Faith in God is no different--- faith implies AN ENCOUNTER WITH SOMEONE

Grace F08ch1-14 In encountering the living God who is Trinity--- each of these people and those who have been baptized place their trust and their lives in the hands of God who is the CREATOR, SUSTAINER and LIFE GIVER. This experience of faith was a growing experience ---- literally a RELATIONSHIP---- that had to be tended. The relationship of faith moved these people to do their best and conform their life to the gospel because by following Christ they found their ULTIMATE HAPPINESS.

  15. Grace F08ch1-15 Every action becomes a part of that discernment as to whether or not a person is growing in a more authentic relationship with God or moves them away from that relationship. There are three parts to any decision to be made: the object chosen; the intention of the person; and the circumstances. The action chosen is this really a good --- it this going to help me become who I truly am as a sons or daughter of God---- does it call forth in my relationship to be the best

  16. Grace F08ch1-16 Object Intention Circumstances One’s intentions are always important because the point to the requisite freedom necessary to do something. What is the degree of culpability someone has in performing an action---- are they truly able to act of their own accord or are there outside pressures forcing them to do something Is there the ability or maturity to perform an action that calls forth a response that is not popular.

  17. Grace F08ch1-17 Object Intention Circumstances What are the circumstances in which the discernment is being made Is this action very important or is it something very insignificant---- can it be something insignificant that over time will be significant How does this impact the overall relationship with God---self---- and others. Does one realize even things that are alone--- not involving others or groups do have an effect on the trust I bring to a relationship
