  1. Advanced water technologies for a better future Is this our reality? Prof Hadas Mamane Tel Aviv University Visiting faculty, IIT Madras

  2. The future • Climate change, population growth and water shortage - “HYDRO-POLITICAL” instabilities & water wars • Ganga is a hot-spot • Bad management of water • Water Quantity • Water streams are drying up • Agriculture uses > 70% of water • Desalination, drip irrigation – can save water and produce water • Water Quality – stop the illusion • There is no low cost solution to purify contaminated water • To contaminate its easy to purify its complex

  3. I will ask two questions

  4. Question 1 - What is water? H20

  5. What is water?

  6. Question 2 – how much do we care about the future generation to make a change?

  7. Sustainable vs. non-sustainable growth • Politicians and business people – Lets conquer nature and profit from it • Lets use water resource un-sustainably • Lets value water resources as useful to humans • Water has its own right to be pure • Growth without sustainability is not growth • In fact it will add to the environmental problem • No capacity – you cannot copy the model of developed countries • We must compromise between sustainable growth and developing new markets, consumers, new technologies, services, products

  8. The good water and the bad waterwe drink good water and generate the bad water – sewage – black waterand then what???

  9. We can recharge or use treated sewage (black) or the Gray – call it as you wish to feel better recycled water, reclaimed water, New-water • Advantage – constant water source; avoid env contamination • We can recharge and capture rain water only when it rains

  10. Can we depend on the Monsoon rainfall? • What the future holds • Extreme and intense rainfalls • Instabilities • Spatial frequency • Decrease in rainfall • On avg dry places become drier • On avg wet places become drier

  11. Chennai my home for the past year - "Day Zero“which city is next? What is the quality of the water stored?

  12. Open dump Chennai

  13. Water and Innovation • Water is viewed as a basic human right • Only few studies on water and innovation • Strategic efforts on funding – reality is different • Innovation in water technology depends on demand and supply along with water value chain • Dynamics between water innovation to water users as well as households • Water innovation systems • Tools to measure water innovation are lacking

  14. Scientists and business people Role of the university is to generate knowledge Generally scientist do not know what cost of innovation Speaking different languages – need a mediator Always about the price The real price considers the environment grants that bring academics and industrial people together

  15. Industrial and domestic wastewater contamination Toxic wastewater Solutions

  16. Adsorption of contaminants 1hour Mild stirring RhBdye+ Chemotherapy drugs+ Microplastics 95% Removal After Before

  17. How to match industry-pollutant-treatment?

  18. What are we doing on water sustainability at Tel Aviv University in India?Joint activities Ram Fishman, Department of Public PolicyHadas Mamane, Faculty of Engineering

  19. Synergies1 + 1 > 2
