  5. CAHSEE • You must pass both the Language Arts (English) and Mathematics sections of the CAHSEE in order to receive a High School Diploma. 350 is a passing score. • Seniors have an opportunity to take the CAHSEE on: • Fall 2013: November 5th and 6th • Spring 2014: May 13th and 14th

  6. STEP TWO • Be proactive about your grades! • Know Progress/Report Card dates. • Know your resources if you need help.

What If I Am Not Passing My Classes? • Weekly Progress Report/ Synergy grade book • Tutorial • Saturday Scholars • Talk to your Teachers • Talk to your Counselor • Make sure you are attending class • ABC Program (Homework Club from 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm everyday) • Library (Tutoring help open until 8:00 pm) =

  9. What if I Need To Make Up Missing Credits/Requirements? • Talk to your Counselor!!!!!!!! ASAP. • There are ways you can make up credits! • Adult Education • ROP classes • Palomar Community College • 0/7th period in Learning Center

  10. Step 3 ATTENDANCE • You miss out when you are not in class. • Remember after 8 tardies/truancies you may be dropped from a class with an “F”. • “F”= no credits! • You must clear of all your Saturday Schools and Detentions in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.

  13. Option 1: Colleges/Universities • There Are 4 Systems of Higher Education in California • California Community Colleges • California State University (CSU) • University of California (UC) • Private and Independent Colleges

  14. California Community Colleges • 110 community colleges • Open admission • Smaller classes/ Pick your own classes • Affordable- $46.00 per credit • Transfer partnerwith four-year education systems in the state

  15. Our Local Community College Palomar • Math/English Placement Testing at OGHS in the Spring 2014. (EAP) • TAG Program = Transfer Admission Guaranteed • These are just a few of the Interesting Programs/Majors they have: • Journalism -Culinary Arts -Fashion • Auto Body Works - Diesel Mechanics • Fire Science - Criminology – Police Academy

  16. UC/CSU“A-G” Subject Requirements • A. History/Social Science – 2 years required • B. English – 4 years required • C. Mathematics – 3 years required, 4 recommended • D. Laboratory Science – 2 years required, 3 recommended • E. Language other than English – 2 years of the same language required, 3 recommended • F. Visual and Performing Arts –1 year • G. College Preparatory Electives – 1 year UC-approved course list for OGHS is available online at: www.ucop.edu/doorways/list

California State University(CSU) • Our local CSU is Cal State San Marcos University (23 in all) • In order to apply: • Need to meet A-G requirements with grades of “C” or better. • Take SAT/ACT with writing by Dec. at the latest! • (Some CSUs deadline by November) • Check deadlines with each CSU (i.e. SDSU wants by November). • Start Applying Oct 1st • Will need Transcript and ACT/SAT Test scores • If you do not qualify for an admission application fee waiver. Application Fee is $55 per campus. • You may qualify for an Application Fee waiver: See your Counselor for details. APPLICATION DEADLINE is November 30th • www.csumentor.com

University of California (UC) • UCSD is local campus (10 in all) • In order to apply: • Need to meet A-G requirements with grades of “C” or better. • Take SAT/ACT with writing by Dec. at the latest! • Start Applying Nov 1st! • Will need transcript, test scores and also write two essays • You can start working on application Oct 1st • Application Fee $70 per campus if you do not qualify for fee waiver. Private & Independent Universities • USD & Point Loma Nazarene are local campuses (73 + in CA) • In order to apply: • Need to meet A-G requirements with C or better. • Taken SAT/ACT with writing by Dec. at the latest! • Taken SAT Subject Test (for some colleges) • Need letters of recommendation (including Counselor ltr. of req.) • Need counselor to fill out information G.P.A. , Rank etc… (please give your counselor two weeks notice) • Specific Admission requirements, when to apply, deadline and application fee varies must look at specific University website to find out this information. • www.commonapp.orgor visit each Private University webpage

  20. Which Test Should I Take? • California State University campuses use either the ACT or the SAT in the calculation of your eligibility index. The fact that you can submit either test may surprise you since you may have only heard about one test or the other. • We cannot easily advise you about which test to take, but here are some differences between the ACT and SAT. Speak with your School Counselor to determine which test would be a better measure of your strengths and preparation for university studies. • ACT • The ACT covers four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The ACT Composite score is used for admission to the CSU. • SAT • The SAT consists of three sections: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. Scores from Critical Reading and Math are added and used for admission to the CSU. Scores from the Writing section will not be used for admission purposes to the CSU. • Visit www.collegeboard.com to learn more about the SAT tests and to register online to take the SAT test.

Students must take exams by Nov 30th of their Senior year. San Diego State University and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will only take up through November SAT/ACT dates.

  23. EARLY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (EAP) What is the Early Assessment Program? The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is an academic preparation program developed by the California Department of Education (CDE), the State Board of Education, and the California State University (CSU). Students who take the EAP test in English and/or mathematics are encouraged to maintain their proficiency in English and mathematics at the college-level during their senior year of high school by enrolling in and passing English and mathematics courses.   24. EARLY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (EAP) For EAP English Language Arts and Mathematics Exempt: Students meet CSU placement standards for entry-level baccalaureate coursework. They are exempt from CSU required EPT (English Placement Test) and/or ELM (Entry-Level Mathematics) if they apply to a CSU and are admitted. Non-Exempt: Students are not ready for college-level coursework and are encouraged to enroll in a senior year activity to increase their English writing and/or mathematics skills in preparation for the EPT/ELM exams if they apply to a CSU and are admitted. Incomplete: Students are not ready for college-level coursework because the essay and/or multiple-choice items were incomplete. They are encouraged to enroll in a senior year activity to increase their English writing and/or mathematical skills in preparation for the EPT/ELM exams if they apply to a CSU and are admitted.

  25. Need Help Applying To Universities • College Basics with counselors is on Sept. 27th . If you can’t make it, see your counselor during nutrition break or lunch. • Attend the Counseling ABC College Application every Thursday , starting Oct 3rd-Nov. 21st from 2:45pm to 4:30pm in the College & Career Center. • Ms. Guerra will also be available on Wednesday & Thursdays in College & Career Center during class time. Must have Teacher/Parent permission to miss class.

  26. Option 2: Vocational Technical Programs Vocational programs are to learn a specific trade such as landscaping, construction inspector, cosmetology, police and firefighter.   27. Vocational & Technical Programs In order to apply Make sure the program is accredited Must be 18 years of age Must have High School Diploma Deadlines vary so need to look into the program. Questions to Ask Specifically About Job Placement % of people that are able to find employment after they complete the program? Do you provide services for job placement and if so for how long?

Option 3: Military Army Air Force Navy Marine Corps Coast Guard To Enlist • 18 or 17 with parent constant • Must have high school diploma from a comprehensive high school (not GED or diploma from adult school for some branches ) • Must pass entrance exam (including physical) Talk to Ms. Higar in College & Career Center for more information! ASVAB will be November 21st 2013

  29. Option 4: Work • Did you know the Career Center can help you with: • Resumes • Job Interviews • Getting Job • Workshops about resume writing etc… • Visit Ms. Higarin our new Career Center right next to the learning center is available every Thursday and alternate Monday & Friday

  30. Step 5: Know How To Finance Your Future Financial Aid • Loans • Subsidized • Unsubsidized • Grants • Work study • Scholarships • Did you know the Career Center has a monthly bulletin. Check it out! • www.fastweb.gov • See Ms. Steadry in the counseling office for info on the latest scholarship opportunities.

  31. Financial Aid Is Not Just For Students Going To A 4-Year University • Financial Aid is available for all accredited vocational and technical programs, community college and 4-year schools. • In order to Apply must fill out FAFSA which is a Free Application For Federal Student Aid. • You can start applying January 1st 2014 • Deadline to apply is March 2nd 2014 • www.fafsa.ed.gov • CAL GRANT check with our register (Ms. Krebs) to see if you turned yours in. Counseling department will be hosting financial aid night: Wednesday, January15th, 2014 at 5:30 pm to 8:00pm. FAFSA workshop: Tuesday, February 4th 2014 at 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
