  2. Our Community 1st grade Objective: The students will recognize the people of our community and how important their jobs are.

  3. Members in Our Community • Materials: • 12x18 construction paper • Glue • Miscellaneous craft items (buttons, pipe cleaners, glitter, etc.) • Lined paper • Pencils • Crayons or markers • Smart board • Book: Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens • scissors

  4. Activities • Triangle People • The children will make a member of their community out of construction paper. • They will decorate them and name them. • The children will then write about their member of their community and what they do. They will also talk about what would be happen if their person wasn’t a member of the community.

  5. Activities • The children will have fire safety week • The fireman will visit and give them tips on fire safety. • The children will have police safety week. • Police officers will come in and share with children things such as talking to strangers, crossing the streets, and tips for having a safe Halloween.

  6. Activities • The students will write a letter to someone that they think is important in the community. • This letter will be a thank you letter, letting that community member know that what they do is important. • The students will “interview” a member in the community on what they do. They will then come in and share in the class the other types of jobs that are in our community.

  7. Members in Our Community • To begin the lesson create one triangle person, keep very simple and plain • Read the book “Tops and Bottoms” By Janet Stevens

  8. Members in Our Community • Ask the children if they ever help out at home? • What do they do? • Stretch concept of helping out into not only the home, but the community. • Do they ever help out in the community?

  9. Members in Our Community • Let’s list all of the helpers in our community! • Teachers • Bus drivers • Doctors • Firemen • Policemen • Postmen • The list could go on and on!

  10. Members in Our Community • What do all of these people do? • We are going to talk about how each one helps us.

  11. Teachers • Teachers help us learn! • They help us learn math, science, social studies, art, music, reading, writing, and even more!!

  12. Teachers • What would happen if we had no teachers in the community?? • Do we really need them? • How would our lives be different? • Should we be afraid of them?

  13. Bus Drivers • Bus drivers make sure we get from place to place safely. • They can take us to school, home, on field trips, and lots of other exciting places.

  14. Bus Drivers • What would happen if we had no bus drivers in the community?? • Do we really need them? • How would our lives be different? • Should we be afraid of them?

  15. Doctors • Doctors help us when we are not feeling well or hurt. • They can make our stomach aches go away or bandage up a hurt leg.

  16. Doctors • What would happen if we had no Doctors in the community?? • Do we really need them? • How would our lives be different? • Should we be afraid of them?

  17. Firemen • Firemen can put out fires in homes, cars, and other buildings. • They come to help if there has been an accident.

  18. Firemen • What would happen if we had no firemen in the community?? • Do we really need them? • How would our lives be different? • Should we be afraid of them?

  19. Policemen • Policemen stop people from committing crimes, or doing bad things. • They keep our cities and streets safe. • They help people follow the law.

  21. The Mailman • Deliver letters, news, and bills to our homes. • Keeps people informed and connected to each other.

  23. Members of Our Community • Can you think of anyone else in our community who you see often? • What would happen if these people were not there? • How would your daily lives be different?
