  1. Coil Launchers Geoffrey Aliling Mike Maggio Ryerson Computer Science - www.scs.ryerson.ca

  2. Solenoids Wire wound into a tightly packed helix formation Creates an electromagnetic field when an electric current is applied to the coils The direction of the electromagnetic field is determined by the Right-Hand Rule.

  3. Applications of Solenoids Solenoids can convert energy into motion by moving a ferromagnetic object though it's core. This property can be used for: -Relays -Automobile starter solenoids -Electronic door locks

  4. The Physics of Coil Launchers Coil launchers are an application of Solenoids

  5. Different Types of Coil Launchers Single Stage -Uses one solenoid to launch a projectile Multi Stage -Uses multiple solenoids in combination with a timing circuit to launch a projectile

  6. Our Coil Launcher Parts:-3x 330V 80,100,120 μF capacitors (from disposable cameras) -Multi-layered insulated copper wire coils -A charging circuit from a disposable camera -Plastic straw core -1x AA -1.5V battery E = C*V 2 /2 16J
