3. Why is it important? • The Shang dynasty invented many important things for China. • They invented the first writing system of China. • They made a calendar according to the cycles of the moon.

5. Achievements • Invented a calendar based on the cycles of the moon. • Made China’s first writing system. • Artisans made beautiful bronze containers for cooking and religious ceremonies. • The first leader Tang defeated the evil king of the Xia dynasty.

6. Mandate of Heaven • The Zhou dynasty used the idea of the Mandate of Heaven to justify the over throw of the Shang dynasty. • They claimed that the Shang emperors were corrupt and unfit, so heaven demanded their removal.

7. Warring States • The power of various kingdoms rose and fell throughout the Warring States Period. • The era for warring states lasted for over 200 years.

8. Great Wall • It was built during the warring states era. • Built by rival kingdoms around their territories. • Was connected after the war ended by the Qin dynasty.
