  1. Setting the stage for a clash of worldviews… Hernan Cortez and Aztec Omens

  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8niQ1ZAbwU (stop at 8 min)

  3. The year is 1519… • The Spanish empire is rapidly growing. They’ve established posts in Cuba and Hispaniola (DR and Haiti), and Isabella and Ferdinand send men to explore the Mexican coast. A man named Hernan Cortes is among them… • The Aztec empire is at its height – known for it’s wealth and luxury. They know nothing of the world beyond their own empire, but have heard rumors of strange men in large boats exploring the coast, and are greatly confused by the omens of the gods…

  4. Cuba Aztec Empire Hispaniola

  5. Hernan Cortes • A proud Spaniard • Grew up in a Spain where Isabella and Ferdinand were establishing a large empire, building national unity, and gaining wealth from their new colonies. • Like other Spaniards, Cortes believed Spanish imperialism was their right – the world was theirs to take for Spain.

  6. Hernan Cortes • Read pg 302 • How is Cortez described? • Why did Cortez have to settle where he landed? • How did Cortez convince his crew to stay with him? • Who was Cortez influenced by? How did this help determine his actions?

  7. Aztec Omens • From as early as 1502 when Moctezuma II became emperor, he heard reports about white-skinned foreigners with ships like floating towers. • The descriptions of the Spanish people reminded the Aztec of stories of the god Quetzalcoatl, who was prophesied to return some day soon. • Around this time, the Aztec experienced many frightening Omens • ***Omen – something good or evil that happens and is thought to be a sign of things to come. A prophesy/premonition

  8. Aztec Omens • Read pg 306 • Why would the Aztec think these events were Omens? • Read pg 307 • How do you think these omens and prophesies will affect how Moctezuma perceives Cortes and his men?

  9. The year is 1519… Assignment – write a journal as if you were experiencing Aztec/Spanish history as it happened. Choose 1 of 4 perspectives to write from: • A Pipiltin(upperclass of Aztec) • A Tlacotic (slaves of Aztec) • A Spanish Conquistador • La Malinche (slave girl who translated for Cortes)

  10. The event you are writing about is: Cortes and Moctezuma have not yet met, but their story is beginning… • The Spanish have landed at Veracruz and learn about the wealth of the Aztec people. They set out to explore and conquer the Aztec empire. • The Aztec have heard about Cortes and his conquistadores, but are unsure what the future will bring. They hope for peace, but fear war. • La Malinche, a Mayan girl who was taken into slavery when her people were defeated, is given to Cortes. She becomes his main translator, helping him communicate with the Aztecs and other Native Americans.

  11. Each journal entry… • Should be 2-3 paragraphs in length • Needs to be written from one of the four perspectives. You will use this perspective for each of the 3 journal entries. • Should be written as if it was in a journal/diary
