  15. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report is prepared by BBSD consulting for Midwestern Oil. Its purpose is to outline what a crisis management strategy is, the importance of Midwestern Oil to have a plan, and a proposal to Midwestern Oil to hire BBSD to implement such a plan. When a crisis arises there are three major areas of a company that are impacted: 1) public health and safety, 2) financial loss, and 3) reputation loss (Coombs). Ultimately the demise of a company is not unlikely when faced with the unique challenges of a crisis, whether by accident, ignorance, or acts of God. At BBSD, we have the experience, the knowledge, and have done the research to understand what is needed for a thorough crisis plan to help prepare Midwestern Oil before, during, and after the crisis takes place. What we are proposing to implement follows a four step sequence for navigating, and ideally preventing a crisis from occurring: Crisis Detection, Preparation/Prevention, Containment/Damage Limitation, Recovery, and Learning. When you hire our firm, your company will have a culture that is driven by detection and preparedness. As the CEO of the firm you will rest easy knowing that you have a battle plan for any crisis. In crisis detection the associates will play an active role in identifying signals, capturing those signals, and communicating them through proper channels to help avoid potential crisis. Correct information is passed on to help the Crisis Management Team stay prepared. The team will consist of key players in the organization who will actively practice situations through simulations that our company will run. The simulations will help the team to know what to do when the crisis does occur, in a learn-by-doing atmosphere. Despite all efforts to avoid a crisis, they may inevitably occur. When they do, our firm will support in containment/damage limitation. Midwestern Oil and BBSD will be directly involved in preventing further damage in uncontaminated parts of the organization, community, and/or the environment. We will also identify the correct stakeholders that need to be contacted: media, shareholders, crisis team members, suppliers and emergency personnel. When the crisis is over, it is vital that ongoing recovery and learning is assessed to ultimately help the company become better at detection and preparation. We look forward to working together with Midwestern Oil and implementing all four steps to help build a strong crisis management plan.

  18. INTRODUCTION There is no secret formula for sustainable business growth, but hiring and retaining an effective leadership team is the first step in the right direction. A company’s mission cannot be achieved without the support of their people; therefore, an organization’s inability to hire, retain and develop strong, effective professionals is detrimental to their growth. Effective leaders create a positive environment, foster collaboration among their teams, and therefore, increase productivity. When there is a gap in leadership performance, the results will affect their entire team causing great disruption to business operations. Key position turnover can be triggered by many situations such as planned retirement or unforeseen circumstances like unexpected resignations or death. These scenarios point to the need for an effective succession plan to ensure the company’s ability to meet staffing requirements for key positions before the need arises. It’s a formal process for identifying and developing new leaders to ensure that vacated roles can be quickly filled with well-prepared candidates.

It’s a formal process for identifying and developing new leaders to ensure that vacated roles can be quickly filled with well-prepared candidates. “A succession plan, simply put, is a component of good HR planning and management. Succession planning acknowledges that staff will not be with an organization indefinitely, and it provides a plan and process for addressing the changes that will occur when they leave. Most succession planning focuses on the most senior manager - the executive director, however, all key positions should be included in the plan. Key positions can be defined as those positions that are crucial for the operations of your organization and, because of skill, seniority and/or experience, will be hard to replace. Whenever size and resources permit, a succession plan should involve nurturing and developing employees from within an organization. Employees who are perceived to have the skills, knowledge, qualities, experience and the desire can be groomed to move up to fill specific, key positions.” (HR Planning, 2016)

  24. INTRODUCTION It’s 3:00 AM and the phone rings. You wake up bleary and unsteady from a dream you cannot quite remember. Suddenly you realize that it’s THE phone ringing. The emergency phone that only rings when the CEO is required to be called. As the owner of an oil company, you have specific instructions on who and when that phone can be called. It is your second in command and your largest oil tanker has washed up on the rocks, injuring crew members and leaking gallons of crude oil near protected barrier reefs. The accident itself, he informs you, is being worked on diligently, but now the company must react to the media and wildlife preserves. What do you do? What are your thoughts? Are you prepared? Why don’t you have a plan? Will this be your last call as CEO?

  25. Introduction to Capital Round Consulting 1 Capital Round Consulting has been operating since 1990. For the past 26 years, Capital Round has been conducting management and human resources consulting for all types of businesses. Over the past 10 years, this company has been focused on Software and Technology Company consulting. We have worked with companies like Google, Benefit Focus, Twitter, SPARC, and Salesforce.com. Our company consists of 20 mid-level to senior-level consultants. Many of our consultants have had experience at one of the Big Four firms and our founder and CEO, Tom Thompson, is a former consultant from Deloitte. The company started when Mr. Thompson and a group of his co-workers realized there was a lack of employee investment on behalf of many of the older companies. Since the technology growth that has occurred over the past few decades, companies are struggling to reach and retain a talented workforce – which can be very costly. This is an opportunity cost lost that many companies do not take advantage of. The CHRO of Marriot said it best, “Think about the advantage of a place where talent wants to stay 25 years. Your turnovers are lower, you don’t have as many people you must train every year, break in every year, and you don’t have as many mistakes. A seasoned workforce does a better job – and they cost you less money.” (Rodriguez, CHRO, Marriott) With an opportunity to help companies become proactive instead of reactive, our team has found a niche in the HR consulting market. Companies must be willing to change to remain relevant. It is our job to work side by side with these companies. There is no one solution, every company is different and we treat them as such.

  26. Why are we here? 2 Over the past five years, CloudTech Software Company has shown declines in retention rate, sales, and employee productivity. Our experience tells us that companies that are suffering from such declines will benefit from a change in their environment. A casual work environment that offers incentives, for example, will be more appealing to employees than the stricter work environment. It is for this reason that those more rigid work places are becoming less common. It is clear that when a company offers incentives to its employees, than the whole company benefits. Our experience proves that companies that invest in their employees have more success than those who do not. In the past five years, the retention rate has decreased from 85% to 45%. This statistic shows that in the last year, 55% of the employees left the company. In departure interviews that were conducted by your staff, many of these employees stated that they were leaving to go work for a company with a stronger culture and more employee incentives. Currently, CloudTech Software only offers healthcare coverage. In today’s workforce, this is the most common benefit offered with full-time employment. If CloudTech Software wants to compete with its competitors, it is going to need to start offering an incentive package that appeals to all employees of the company. The graph below shows the five-year employee turnover rate between CloudTech Software and Company X. Company X is a small technology company that was struggling in the same areas as CloudTech has over the past several years. Company X signed on with our three-year program in 2012. Their results in 2015 are exactly where CloudTech Software could be three years from now should it decide to sign on with us.

  28. Thompson Memorial Hospital has been faced with a trending decline in net profits as a direct result of high employee turnover.  We, at Rutledge Consulting, have been given the task to identify the source of high turnover and provide our recommendations on how the hospital should proceed.  We believe that Thompson Memorial Hospital must take a step back and restructure their focus with the employee at the forefront of their minds.   One of the most prominent issues in the healthcare market is recruiting top talent. (Gaffney, 2016) It is costly in more than one way to support a high employee turnover.  Fiscally speaking, constant recruitment and training can quickly eat away at yearly budgets.  New and undertrained hires put a lot of stress on the day to day operations, as well as decrease the workplace morale, resulting in a perpetual turnover of unhappy employees.  By efficiently recruiting, selecting, and retaining quality employees, Thompson Memorial Hospital will be able to provide superior patient care, which will result in better profit margins.
