Problem 11.36

Problem 11.36 Use MO diagrams to place C 2 - , C 2 and C 2 + in order of (a) increasing bond energy and (b) increasing bond length. C 2 - : 9 total valence electrons Bond Order: ½(7-2) = 2.5 C 2 : 8 total valence electrons Bond Order: ½(6-2) = 2 C 2 + : 7 total valence electrons

  1. Problem 11.36 Use MO diagrams to place C2-, C2 and C2+ in order of (a) increasing bond energy and (b) increasing bond length C2-: 9 total valence electrons Bond Order: ½(7-2) = 2.5 C2: 8 total valence electrons Bond Order: ½(6-2) = 2 C2+: 7 total valence electrons Bond Order: ½(5-2) = 1.5 Bond energy increases as bond order increases: C2+<C2<C2- Bond length decreases as bond energy increases, so the order of increasing bond length will be opposite that of increasing bond energy. Increasing bond length: C2-<C2<C2+

  2. Problem 11.38 (a) and (b) • Predict the shape, state the hybridization of the central atom and give the ideal bond angle(s) and any expected deviations for: • BrO3- • AsCl4-
