  1. Burden of Acute Respiratory Tract Infections Morbidity: • Absence from school and work • Expenditures for clinic visits, hospitalization and medications Mortality: Community-acquired pneumonia in children with comorbidities are leading cause of mortality in our country

  2. What causes RTI? • Viruses - majority of infections (70-80%) • Bacteria - acute otitis media and pneumonia • Antibiotic resistance is common among S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and M. catarrhalisisolates

  3. Outline • Introduction • Evaluation and therapy - Acute viral rhinosinusitis (common cold) • Acute sore throat & acute sinusitis • Acute otitis media • Influenza • Community-acquired pneumonia & bronchiolitis • Antibiotic resistance • Conclusion

  4. Common cold • Etiology – mostly viral • Symptoms – runny nose, often mucopurulent discharge is present • Is there role of antibiotics? No role of antibiotics unless mucopurulent discharge persists for >10-14 days
