  1. What is Angioplasty? ● Angioplasty is also known by other names such as balloon angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). ● It is a procedure performed to open the narrowed artery to allow a smooth passage of blood. ● This blockage could be due to the deposition of plaque inside the artery thereby minimizing the space of blood flow. ● Healthcare expert forces the plaque using a balloon against the walls of the artery in a clogged blood vessel which helps to widen it and improve blood flow within it. ● Dr. Ravinder Singh Rao, The Best Angioplasty Expert is giving the best treatment for angioplasty in Jaipur, India. Who Needs Angioplasty? ● Splitting the word angioplasty translates it to, “angio” meaning blood vessel, and “plasty” which means opening up. ● The need for this conventional procedure comes from the requirement of treating narrowed down the artery to regain a better supply of blood to the body parts through blood vessels.

  2. ● A patient suffering from Coronary Artery Disease or has had a heart attack is required to undergo angioplasty. ● This method removes plaques or fatty tissues from the clogged vessel using conventional yet successful procedures and is minimally invasive. What Does It Treat? ● Angioplasty is one of the conventional methods to treat conditions such as heart attacks or CAD due to a condition called Atherosclerosis. ● Atherosclerosis is the deposition of plaque on the walls of the blood vessels (i.e., an artery) that carries blood to different body parts. ● This clogged vessel can cause hindrance of blood flow leading to Angina, i.e., chest pain. Thus, angioplasty facilitates: 1. 2. Angina or chest pain. Supply of blood to the muscles of the heart. What Happens before Angioplasty? ● Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure, but it is still a surgery, therefore all the regular procedures must be followed. ● Your angioplasty expert will follow routine procedures like blood tests, chest X-Ray, and electrocardiograms and the patient must follow the instructions given by the doctor carefully and stepwise. ● To check the actual blockage in the heart and its vessels, a coronary angiogram is performed which clarifies the current condition of the body. ● An angioplasty expert might also suggest some kidney tests as the dye used in the procedure affects kidney function. Certain instructions are given to all the patients undergoing this surgery that includes the following: 1. 2. 3. The patient might be asked to stop water or fluid intake 6-8 hours before the surgery. Only allowed medication is approved with small sips of water. Your angioplasty expert must know all the medicines that you are taking following which you might be asked to stop the intake of aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs.

  3. The Procedure of Angioplasty: ● Cardiologists or angioplasty experts, along with the help of other cardiovascular technicians perform the surgery. ● General anesthesia is not necessary, although a patient is sedated enough to relax during the procedure. ● Through one arm, anticoagulants are provided to help you relax. ● Local anesthesia is used to numb the area locally where the catheter has to be inserted. ● Guided entry of the catheter is made either from the wrist or the groin which is monitored through the X-Ray feed. ● Contrast dye is then injected into the catheter which through the artery reaches the site of blockages and identifies them around the heart. As soon as the blockages are located, the surgeon will guide a second catheter along with which a small balloon is directed to the site of the blockage. ● This balloon when inflated at the site pushes the plaques away opening up the artery. In case of multiple blockages, the process has to be repeated several times. ● This process may or may not be associated with a stent, depending upon the patient’s condition. The stent provides support to the walls of the artery and prevents them from narrowing again. What Happens After The Procedure? ● Your angioplasty expert will remove the catheters and apply a bandage to the area where the catheters were inserted into your skin. ● The patient will be monitored overnight to see if there is any complication related to the surgery, if not, he/she is discharged with well-instructed medication. ● The person is asked to rest well for a week before returning to the regular routine. ● To flush out the contrast dye used during the procedure, fluid intake is advised. A person must immediately consult the health care or angioplasty expert if he/she observes one of the following: ● bleeding/swelling/redness in the area where the catheter was inserted. ● any signs of infection in the body or the site of insertion of the catheter. ● dizziness or nausea. ● chest pain or difficulty in breathing. What are The Benefits and Risks of Angioplasty? There are some benefits and some risks of angioplasty, which are given below:

  4. Benefits of Angioplasty: ● Low cost and less risk. ● Minimally invasive hence fewer wounds. Risks of Angioplasty: ● Infection or reaction because of the dye used. ● Bleeding at the site of catheter insertion. ● Blood clots. ● The blockage might repeat due to the re-deposition of plaques. ● Blood vessel damage. ● Heart attack. Complications are more in old-aged people as compared to middle-aged ones. Recovery time after the surgery: ● Depending upon the severity and number of blockages, post-surgery care and recovery are instructed. ● The patient might need to stay for a few hours or a night to be closely monitored. ● Medication must be strictly followed as suggested by the cardiologist. ● If taken proper care of, the patient recovers soon from the surgery and can back to the normal routine within a week’s time.
