  1. NEMS progress April 3, 2009

  2. Ed Colon • Chief coordinator of the subversion repository trunk of NEMS • Maintains NEMS code repository structure: directory names and common code as well as makefiles and scripts • Develops and maintains NEMS regression tests • Both GFS and NMM-B • Same answers for different numbers of tasks • Same answers for different numbers of threads • Successfully installed digital filter initialization in NEMS • Both GFS and NMM-B • Both “forward” (GFS) and “backward-forward” (RUC)

  3. Ratko Vasic • Maintains and tests ESMF libraries and upgrades • Has fed back many ESMF issues to ESMF core team and has frequently been a beta-tester for ESMF • Maintains fast feedback communication between ESMF core team and NEMS team • Works with Matt Pyle and George Gayno in testing NEMS initial conditions • Installed parallel restart capability • Working in NEMS NMM-B • Soon to be available in NEMS GFS • Installed GWD in NEMS NMM-B • Now developing the coupling of GFS physics with NMM-B dynamics

  4. Weiyu Yang • Returning to work on NEMS after working on another project • Supporting ensemble capability in NEMS • Developed single-executable ensemble capability in current operational (non-NEMS) GFS • Working on porting Dingchen Hou’s ensemble coupling to NEMS • Supporting development of ocean-atmosphere couple capability in NEMS

  5. Jun Wang • Developed and maintains NEMSIO • Used for history and restart output data • Parallel I/O capability on NEMS quilt servers • Both GRIB1 and binary with full metadata • GRIB2 and NETCDF4 in future • GFS and NMM-B and icosahedral grids • Support for very large files • Installed NEMS quilt server capability in NEMS GFS • Enables parallel I/O without slowing down model integration • Installed NCEP Post in NEMS • Post runs in same executable as model • Post runs on NEMS quilt servers • Both GFS and NMM-B

  6. Other key developers • Tom Black • Developing nesting capability in NEMS • Arlindo daSilva (NASA), Sarah Lu et al • Developing aerosol model in NEMS • Jim Geiger et al (NASA) • Developing separate LIS land model in NEMS • Tom Henderson et al (ESRL) • Bringing in FIM icosahedral global atmospheric dynamics coupled with GFS physics in NEMS • Team to adopt CFS atmosphere-ocean coupler in NEMS
