  3. Biblical reasons against homosexuality Romans 1:26-28 First Timothy 1:9-10 • 1969:Stonewall Riots occur in New York City on June 27. A gay rights protest turns into a riot; lasting three days vs

  4. 1973: American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from list of mental disorders • 1979: 75,000 people walk in National March in Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. • 1982: WI becomes first state to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation • 1984: Berkeley CA becomes first city to offer employees domestic-partnership benefits • 1993: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy is instituted into military; allows gays to serve in military, but banning homosexual activity • 2000: Vermont is first state to legally recognize civil unions between gay and lesbian couples (equal benefits, privileges, and responsibilities)

November 2003: Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled banning gay and lesbian marriage violates the constitution • May 17, 2004: Same sex marriages become legal in Massachusetts • October 2005: Civil Unions become legal in Connecticut • December 2006: Civil Unions become legal in New Jersey • 2008: Iowa • 2009: Vermont and New Hampshire • 2011: New York • 2012: Washington

Health • 1950s: Dr. Evelyn Hooker conducted study on 30 homosexuals and 30 heterosexuals trying to prove gay men were mentally unhealthy and maladjusted, as well as inherently unhealthy • Findings proved there are no increased mental health risks amongst homosexuals • This led to the American Psychiatric Association removing homosexuality from the DSM in 1973

  7. Family Donated sperm is safe no matter who donates it with proper testing. HIV knows no gender, race or sexual orientation • FDA recommends a ban on gay men as sperm donors unless celibate for five years prior to donating, yet a heterosexual man can participate in unprotected sex 14 months prior to donating vs

Counseling Risks • Don’ts: • Focus on sexual orientation if not relevant • Lack understanding of the nature of identity development • Underestimate the importance of intimate relationships • Presume a client is a poor/inappropriate parent based on sexual orientation • Lack knowledge and rely on client to educate therapist on homosexual issues • Do’s: • Treat homosexual clients no different than any other client • Become aware of personal biases towards homosexuals • Realize that a homosexual client does not attend therapy to change their sexual orientation • Focus on changing behaviors rather than who they are • Refer out client if therapist is unable to accept or respect them

Pride and the Media • Journalists acknowledge LGBT people are entitled to the same fairness, integrity and respect given to others • Media is increasingly recognizing the value of LGBT stories, struggles, and lives • LGBT people in the spotlight: Ricky Martin, Clay Aiken, Boy George, Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Lambert, George Michael, Freddie Mercury, and Elton John

  12. Awareness • Homophobic insults viewed as seriously as racism • Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation and Youth • Homosexuals are at a higher risk for suicide, and drug/alcohol abuse

  13. Gay Pride Month • Celebrated in June • Honor impact of LGBT • On five occasions, the President of the United States has recognized June as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” • Events during Pride month: pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, and concerts
