Key Information • The Phonics Screening Check is a ‘Statutory’ check for all Year 1 & some Year 2 Pupils • It will be carried out between Monday 17th and Friday 21st June 2013 • Teachers must administer the test, one-to-one with each child (Mrs Lyford & Mrs Lawton) • Schools must inform parents of their child’s results (End of Year Reports)
Key Information • The test consists of 40 words • A mixture of real words and pseudo words (non words/ nonsense words/ alien words) • Schools will be sent different sets of words • First section will include Phase 2 & 3 sounds • Second section will include Phase 2, 3, 4 & 5 sounds • The teacher records the children’s responses as correct or incorrect
Why does the Year 1 Screening Check include non-words? ‘Beginning and struggling readers need to understand that they do not have to know the meaning of every word they read. They need to be confident that when they encounter an unfamiliar word they can decode it, even if it has no meaning to them.’ (DFE – The Importance of Phonics: securing confident reading)
Phonics Screening Check Pilot • Took place in June 2011 • 300 schools took part • Not all schools piloted the same bank of words • Only 31.8% of the children met the expected standard! • Expected standard is ‘children reading between 31 and 34 words out of 40 correctly. (Therefore the expected standard between schools is not the same) • Not comparable with expected standard at Key Stage 1 & 2 (18 out of 40)
Things to Consider... • Phonics (decoding) is only one of the elements of reading – using picture clues, predicting, reading words in the context of the text, reading for meaning and enjoyment... • During our own Letters and Sounds assessments - we find children substitute letters in alien words to make them real ‘reb’ ‘red’ • Groups of letters representing different sounds – th, oo, ow • A large majority of children will not meet the expected standard (Pilot & 2012 Figures)
Things to Consider... • The test is hard! • We have to deliver it in the way outlined by the testing agency • The results of the Phonics Screening Check are not a key priority to us, as we assess reading in a range of different ways • The age of our children
How we are planning to deliver the Phonics Screening Check? • Mrs Lyford will be administering the checks Monday- Thursday • Mrs Lawton will possibly complete the rest on Friday • The children will be focusing on an Alien Topic for two weeks- Reading the story/ watching the video for Way Home, hot seating, creating own stories, alien masks, alien language... • School Trip!
Informing Parents... • The results of the Phonics Screening Check will be on the End of Year Report • There are many other ways to assess the progress and achievements your child has made in reading • Emphasis on the informed comments the teacher has made throughout the year in the report and during parents evenings • If your child has not met the expected standard they may do it again in June of Year 2
Key Message • We have to deliver the Phonics Screening Test as outlined by the Testing Agency • We will encourage the children to try their very best • We will not put too much emphasis on the result – we should all be celebrating the individual progress the children have made in reading as a whole • If a child does not meet the expected level- this does not mean they have ‘failed’ as a reader • We need to work together to ensure our children’s confidence and enjoyment of reading is not destroyed • We will stop the test if any child becomes uncomfortable with it
